The RIBA National Awards are the UK's flagship architecture award. It is from the number of buildings marked by them that the short list of the Sterling Prize is formed, awarded for the best building of the year. In 2015, out of 37 laureates, eight are housing, from the elite, like the residential complex on the banks of the Thames, from Richard Rogers, to the social, like Darbishire Place by Niall McLaughlin Architects. A separate chapter is made up of exemplary educational institutions - from kindergartens to university buildings. In this regard, RIBA President Stephen Hodder noted that, against the general background of poor quality of new residential buildings and dilapidated existing schools, a significant number of laureates of these types are encouraging, which gives hope for the best. Another trend in 2015 was the widespread use of bricks - of all shades and types.
