Two buildings with a total of 165 apartments (17,000 m2) are located in the central part of the city on the island of Kungsholmen. The project was ordered by Skanska, whose headquarters are located next door and close the Västermalms Atrium complex from the busy highway. In addition to the housing itself, there is an underground parking lot and a kindergarten, the roof of which is used to form a courtyard that slopes down to the street.
The decoration of the external facades is deliberately restrained - gray plaster, regular rhythm and correct geometry of windows, small neat balconies indicating the location of the bedrooms - an external protective "skin". Inside the courtyard, the buildings open with triangular balconies. One gets the impression of a dollhouse cut in half, which is further strengthened by the gable roof shape: at the edges of the building they have a height of 7 floors, and in the central part - as many as 15. It is interesting that the location of the skates does not coincide, complicating the silhouette of the whole complex and somewhat confusing the viewer. The feeling of intimacy of the interior space is also emphasized by the light natural wood that appears in the decoration of the courtyard facades and the kindergarten. At the same time, from many lateral points, the buildings are still perceived as a single volume, hiding the privacy of apartment owners from prying eyes.
Almost solid glazing and the orientation of the balconies to the south-west made it possible to fill the bright living rooms with sunlight that is scarce for northern Europe. True, the orientation of the balconies exactly inward, in the very corner of the courtyard, somewhat reduces the effectiveness of this technique. Inside, the buildings, impressive in their volume, are organized quite simply: around each staircase apartments are grouped into two, three and four bedrooms. Almost all of them have windows to both the courtyard and the outside. And the gable form of the roof made it possible to arrange two-storey apartments on the upper floors. So the "puppet" associations turn out to be fleeting and superficial: in Västermalms Atrium, everything is extremely serious and pragmatic.
