The passenger terminal for servicing local and international ferries, as well as cruise liners, was conceived as part of the general development plan for Salerno back in 1993, and Zaha Hadid's bureau won the competition for its design in 2000.

A relatively small building with a total area of 4500 m2 is located on a part of the promenade promenade protruding into the harbor space. Its surface rises slightly as it approaches the terminal, "preparing" the passenger for the ramps in the interior, along which he will rise to board large ferries and liners.

The concrete shell of the building resembles an oyster shell, according to the authors of the project: it protects passengers from the hot Mediterranean sun. At the same time, from the inside, there are views of the picturesque Amalfi coast and the Gulf of Salerno.

The building is divided into three functional parts: offices of border guards and transport companies, and service areas for national and international passengers. There are a waiting room, shops and cafes, check-in areas, passport and customs control, personal inspection, baggage claim.

The new terminal is expected to help increase the throughput of the Port of Salerno by 500,000 passengers a year, which will create 2,000 additional jobs in the urban service sector.
