Pyotr Vinogradov, architect, founder of the PRO. MOTION project, one of whose areas of work is the creation of metal sculptures. His new project is called Industrial Homes. For the first time I saw them at Zodchestvo and decided that the iridescent brutal metal models with the pretentious accompanying text about labor and the red map of Russia were nothing more than a joke, shocking capitalist nerves. In my case, the name, coupled with the description, evoked an association with the "workhouses" of imperial Russia. But the layouts are beautiful and attract at least unconventional durable material.
But no. Industrial houses are the idea of modular housing in the harsh style of industrial, devoid of excessive comfort, which should stimulate their abodes to work, apparently, creative. I would like to wish the author to find an investor and see what will come out of houses with a metal frame, whether they will be as romantic as at the exhibition, or will be overgrown with comfort. We are talking with Peter Vinogradov.
When did the project start, what did you show at Zodchestvo, and what is the difference between what is here?
- The project started a little over half a year ago, before Zodchestvo. An idea was born: we love industrial structures, we love to photograph them, we love to comprehend, but we want to somehow manifest this in practice. The customer will not come by itself, it is necessary to evolve, develop. And a seemingly simple thought came: let's give this style of brutal structures and put it on some residential plans. The result is a series of layouts. By and large, nothing has changed with Zodchestvo, we continue to quietly develop planning solutions. We have the opportunity to work with metal in our workshops, for example, to make such modular houses. We plan to reach our design partners, calculate and, perhaps, offer to the market as finished products.
So this is not a joke, residential modular houses made of iron?
- Yes, there is such an idea. Metal frame. Nowadays there is a fashion for wooden prefabricated structures. They cost some money, maybe not very much in relation to the usual commercial market. Metal, of course, is more serious. But it is also more durable. The frame modular system allows the elements to be recruited. We already have a private residential building, a modular hotel, and a small five-storey building based on a block with a diameter of six meters. The facade is made of sandwich panels. Still in work. At this rate, I think we will work on it for another year, since there are many other interests as well. And the topic is long, interesting, I don't want to do it on the go, I want to comprehend. We comprehend little by little.
In itself, it is very curious. And the house on legs can be sharpened in full size?
- Of course. Here we have modular houses: a private house and a hotel. What's the trick? The hotel has a separate room on each floor, with a separate entrance. The stairs are all open, everything goes through on fire issues: immediately going out into the street, the escape route. We can recruit it in modules, the question is in the stairs, how many stairs to fence. There is some kind of social network inside. Something like a roadside motel.
Here is an apartment building. One floor is an apartment. 5-8 apartments. Can be broken down into three parts, depending on social significance.
And what's up, inside the top nut?
- Also apartments, they are here, on the model, brutally marked. There will be stained glass windows and panoramic views.
The tallest tower, apartment building, 75 meters high, in the spirit of industrial buildings. There is a lack of modularity, pure form, sculpture.
What is interesting about a small house? We take three blocks, here you can also add garages, separate entrances. At the top, open areas are obtained. If you look from here, you can arrange a barbecue. You sit on the roof under the roof, breathe fresh air, and complete isolation from the surrounding world - or, conversely, in harmony with it. These are all models in the hundredth scale.
A house in a ravine, a private house in fiftieth. The back door or, on the contrary, the front door, how to consider. We already have plans for it, the task has been given to the designers. Simple modular system, simple step. House-studio, designed for a ravine.
Can it appear in a specific place?
– Upon request. Thank God, we have enough ravines. We need to find a good customer who understands the aesthetics of the building. One wants to work in such a building, not just live. Back in the same year at Zodchestvo students of MARSH said that they wanted to work in these houses. They understood the essence correctly, without even reading the texts, they just saw the layout. And even a little scared: at home for comfort. Real houses are for real working comfort in fact, because there is a lot of over-commercialization, a lot of these unfolded, unfolded facades. I would like to return to the origins, because the profession is lost. There is a lack of a certain brutality, even, perhaps, provocation, everything became even. We take a topic that is understandable to everyone, it is close to us, and we may be the first to take a more active step, the first very small step towards making housing out of this.
We cannot practically exist in existing industrial buildings, structures, because they are emergency or belong to someone, or stand somewhere in the fields. We propose to simply create them from scratch, make them new, reliable, to some extent elite - for the elite of the spirit.
