In the center of the Netherlands, surrounded by the Meuse and Rhine rivers, the Biesbosch National Park is located. And in its very "heart" on an artificial island, a museum complex was built, which is a ridge of green hills. After the recent renovation, the number of visitors to the museum has grown by 3.5 times - from 2,900 to 10,000 people a month.

The Biesbosch Natural History Museum is one of the few buildings on our planet that has been transformed into a natural landscape. And it is swampy in this region, somewhat reminiscent of the Grimpen Bog from "The Dog of the Baskervilles" by Conan Doyle. The museum expositions are dedicated to the history of interaction between man and the National Park: the constant fight against pollution, the advancing water, the complete disappearance of some representatives of fauna and flora.

Why is a turf roof needed even in a nature reserve?

The main building with characteristic hexagonal roofs was built here at the end of the last century. But over time, it became clear that the complex needed reconstruction - first of all, it was necessary to add more space. The architects Studio Marco Vermeulen, who were involved in this project, proved that everything can be different in relation to nature. That the turf roof becomes a "bridge" between old and new, which leads to interaction with the surrounding landscape.

The previous buildings were carefully preserved, a new volume of 1000 sq. M was added to them from the south-west. m Large panoramic windows of this pavilion with energy-efficient double-glazed windows are turned towards nature, that is, they strengthen the relationship between external and internal space. Extensive turf roof protects waterproofing from destruction and reduces heat loss with the onset of cold weather. You can find detailed information on the benefits of installing roof greening systems on the website of the roofing and landscape company "Tsinko RUS", which has an anniversary this year - 20 years since its foundation. It is there that you can order a full range of services, from professional design and construction to maintenance of green roofs.

Water is also an important part of the Biesbosch project. It washes the island and enters the local restaurant in the form of an artificial stream, and then collects in the tanks of the air conditioning system. And on summer days, it cools all indoor spaces, further reducing the cost of climate control.
