Until the end of September in Gorky Park you can visit the “temple of silence” - a pavilion created by architects and acoustics specialists. The noise level here drops from 25 dB to 5, despite the fact that the space is open, and enough natural light gets into it.

The concept of "preservation of silence" belongs to Sergei Kasich, he has been working on it for about ten years. The main idea is to find quiet places in the city - for example, using the Urbica noise map - and save them. Basically, making quiet places even quieter. This requires special structures that shield the place from external noise, absorb the sound inside, but remain open, inviting you to come in and experience a new experience.

The first "protective structure" was implemented this year with a grant from the Garage Museum. Architects from

Bureau Scheme came up with an aesthetic shell, acoustic engineers consulted on materials.

The pavilion was supposed to be concrete, but there was not enough budget for this. Therefore, the main structures are made of wood. Roofing material was chosen for the external cladding, which also has the quality “quiet” - it not only protects the tree from moisture, but also does not distract the viewer with color or texture.

The plywood sheets inside the room are covered with a perforated ornament of circles of two diameters - in fact, this is a binary-coded audio recording of the noise of the place where the pavilion appeared. In the center there is a scattering wall - a similar geometry can be found in anechoic laboratories of scientific research institutes and recording studios. A sound-absorbing material made of plant fibers is hidden behind the panels. The ceiling in the pavilion is open, thanks to which a lot of light gets inside and a little noise that is reflected from the trees.

In the pavilion, a person feels in a special way: as soon as he crosses the threshold, silence collapses - the difference in decibels is so great, and in general such an environment is unusual for a city dweller. People, including children and adolescents, unconsciously begin to speak and move quieter, hear their voices differently, and concentrate. Sergei Kasich would like the pavilion to become a platform for experiments - quiet concerts, sound recording, performances. In his opinion, such places should encourage something new.
