After a hectic day full of traffic noise, conversations, knocks, rattles, you really want to hide within the walls of a house or apartment and enjoy the silence. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. Soundproofing in our city apartments is poor. As a result, renovations, violin lessons, and a fun party in our neighbors' apartment invariably become our headaches. Moreover, in the truest sense of the word. How to be? It is best to solve the problem comprehensively and globally - to arrange sound insulation in the apartment yourself.

Making the right choice

The choice of soundproofing materials is now wide enough. As they say, the eyes run up. It is easy for a person who is not a great specialist in this matter to get confused. Therefore, you should know what is important to pay attention to.

  1. The value of a sound insulating material lies in its ability to effectively absorb noise. To determine this value, the airborne noise insulation index - Rw, which is measured in decibels and serves to assess the sound insulation ability of a structure, helps. This indicator should be contained in the marking of materials for sound insulation. It's simple: the higher the Rw value, the better the sound insulation.
  2. There are three main indicators of room comfort: thermal, humidity and acoustic. More effective are those materials that are able to meet all three indicators as much as possible. Accordingly, it is more efficient to use non-combustible materials, which also have additional vapor permeability, that is, they can remove excess moisture through the enclosing structures and thereby create a healthy microclimate in the room. One of the most popular materials that fully meets these criteria is stone wool. This thermal insulation material is obtained by melting rocks. The main characteristics of stone wool are just low thermal conductivity, incombustibility, vapor permeability and high sound absorption.

Thus, TechnoNICOL stone wool slabs reduce the noise level in a wide frequency range. This is achieved through a fibrous structure that effectively dampens the sound wave. The simplest laws of physics work here: sound waves, meeting the surface of the material, cause the air between the fibers to vibrate. The fibers, in turn, offer significant resistance to the flow of air through them, due to which the movement of air inside the material is inhibited. As a result of viscous friction, part of the sound energy is converted into heat, and the wave itself is attenuated.

In Russia, there are rather strict acoustic standards: 30 decibels - at night, 40 decibels - during the day. Nevertheless, the realities of today show: the noise in the city on the streets with heavy traffic is approximately 80-85 decibels, especially in metropolitan areas. According to doctors, noise has an adverse effect on the central nervous system, leading to a decrease in labor productivity, sleep disturbances, headaches, and increased blood pressure.

Let's start with the walls

First of all, unwanted sounds enter our apartments through the walls. Interior frame partitions filled with soundproofing material based on stone wool are the best choice for ensuring acoustic comfort indoors. They have various combinations of insulation thickness and the number of sheathing layers, which makes it possible to reduce the airborne noise level to the required level.

There are two options for frame partitions filled with soundproofing material based on stone wool:

TN-STENA Akustik is a system of partitions made of gypsum fiber or gypsum plasterboard sheets on a steel frame with a soundproof layer of stone wool slabs TECHNOACUSTIK. This material belongs to the K0 fire hazard class, that is, it is fireproof and retains these properties in case of fire for 40 minutes or more, which fully meets modern fire standards. You can install the system yourself. To do this, according to the previously made markings of the walls and ceiling, fix the guide profiles, on the outer side of which a sealing tape is glued and install the rack profiles with a step of 600 mm. Sheathe the frame with whole sheets of gypsum plasterboard or gypsum plasterboard with a width of 1200 mm on one side of the wall, and after preliminary laying of all communications and installing the TECHNOAKUSTIK slabs in a spacer, on the other side of the wall, displacing the vertical seams between the sheathing sheets by 600 mm. With two-layer cladding, it is necessary to provide for the gap of the gypsum board seams by one profile.

TN-WALL Standard is a system of internal soundproof cladding, which is a multilayer partition, where one of the cladding is replaced by an existing wall. It is necessary to increase the sound and heat insulating ability of an already erected wall and is especially relevant for the reconstruction of buildings.

The design of a multilayer partition with a sound-insulating layer fully meets the requirements of SP 51.13330 for residential buildings as protection against noise generated by sources common in everyday life (for example, a quiet conversation, playing the piano, and so on). The design of prefabricated partitions exerts more than 6 times less pressure on the floor structure compared to a brick wall, while allowing easy construction of partitions of various shapes.

Let's not forget about the ceiling

In order not to interfere with the neighbors from above, you need to worry about soundproofing the ceilings. This makes it possible to isolate not only the propagation of sound along the vertical direction, but also along the horizontal one (Fig. 2). In addition, suspended ceilings allow you to hide communications running under the ceiling and decorative flaws in the slab.

TN-CEILING Acoustic is an internal soundproofing system with a steel frame, in the construction of which TECHNOACUSTIK stone wool slabs are used by TechnoNICOL.

When installing such ceilings, you must first mark the walls with a level and carry out the supply of all communications and fasten all built-in items to the base of the ceiling. Next, install the guide profiles, hangers, on which to attach the ceiling profile with a step of 600 mm. For the strength of the system, it is better to connect adjacent profiles to each other. Lay the TECHNOACUSTIK stone wool slabs in a spacer and sheathe with solid sheets of gypsum board or gypsum plasterboard. In case of two-layer cladding, it is necessary to split the GVL seams into one profile.

TechnoNIKOL Corporation has a conclusion of the Research Institute of Building Physics (NIISF RAASN) on the topic: "Measurement of sound insulation properties of structures using stone wool, manufactured by TechnoNIKOL" for systems TN-STENA Acoustic, TN-STENA Standard, TN-CEILING Acoustic.

Using TECHNOAKUSTIK slabs for soundproofing your house or apartment and following the advice on installing systems, you can reduce the noise level by 3-5 times. A noisy street behind a wall or neighbors who like to watch TV at high volume will stop bothering you. The volume of sounds after work will be comparable to the whisper or rustle of foliage. You can relax and unwind in silence.
