The popularity of Gelendzhik as a Black Sea resort made it necessary to expand the existing airport terminal or even replace it with a new one - modern and spacious. The new airport with a total area of 7,800 m2 will be designed for domestic flights to 11 Russian cities, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Kazan.

The Studio Fuksas project is inspired by the image of a bird, but not statically soaring, but dynamic - changing the direction of flight. The architects have thought of a clear solution to the interior space and optimal use of sunlight. The structure will be linked with the context by the generous landscaping of native tree species (including in the parking area) and the important role that the authors have given to the surrounding landscape.

The architects also developed a transport scheme for the airport: a one-way ring road along which buses and cars reach short-term and long-term parking lots, a drop-off zone in front of the main entrance to the building and bus parking lots. This logistics system is concentrated on the western side of the new terminal to keep out of sight of passengers.
