About the competition

In the city of Wellington, New Zealand, from 2018-15-04 to 2018-30-10, an international architectural competition was held to design a creative exhibition center on the waterfront of Oriental Bay on the site of the old Band Rotunda pavilion. It was necessary to create a bright and modern image, which includes the functions of exhibition premises and a public center.

Our Wellington Wave project took first place.

Jury comment:

This proposal is a bold sculptural statement based on marine life form analogy. It is one of the most practical solutions but, at the same time, it contains a high degree of innovation and novelty.

Movement and transformation

The shore is movement. Movement of water, movement of people, movement of sand and stones, movement of air. The shore is a transformation. Transformation of sunset into dawn, transformation of low tide into high tide, transformation of matter into sand, dust and steam, transformation of the heat of the day into evening coolness, transformation of a weary one into a happy contemplator.

Our project is growing from the shore. There is no clear boundary between vertical and horizontal, between the interior and the exterior, between the building and the beach, between the embankment and the roof of the building. Waves beat against the steps of the amphitheater, bringing sand onto it, and the building merges with the beach and the sea. Pedestrians pass freely through all parts of the building and can be wherever they want, on the roof, inside, on the beach. All movement around, inside and through the building is fluid and unhindered by sharp angles and visual barriers. Anyone will find a place here. The building houses a community center, exhibition hall and recreational facilities. You can hide under a canopy from the scorching sun and rain. From the observation deck, you can see the surroundings in a new light. The building also contains an amphitheater, which is a resting place and a link between the promenade and the beach. Our building is a place where everything meets, moves and transforms.
