Citizenstudio architects Daniil Nikishin and Mikhail Beilin saw the studio's top task as creating a recipe for saving the city's utilitarian buildings: “these“urban robots”need to invent life and be given the opportunity to again benefit the citizens”.

Mikhail Beilin, Daniil Nikishin, Nadezhda Chadovich

heads of the studio “Reincarnation. New utility :

“The development of technology has exacerbated the contradiction between a person's desire to live with the greatest comfort and ideas about the value of historical artifacts. The main victim of technological progress has become engineering structures - the servants of the city that ensure the functioning of its physical systems. Electrical substations, water towers, automatic telephone exchanges, computer centers of the computer era have lost their importance in the modern city.

A common recipe for their preservation is the transformation of an object into a museum or community center. However, the need for these functions is much lower than the number of such structures, and unique structures usually become objects of transformation, while typical objects often remain unclaimed.

The studio was looking for ways that would allow not to museumize, but to reincarnate the key content of typical engineering structures, the functions of which are outdated or are about to become obsolete.

The studio members viewed the city as a utilitarian space and concentrated on modern technical structures to better understand the nature of old technical structures. It was necessary to find new purposes and new value for them in order to create immunity for the structures from future threats.

When the technical systems that support the life of the city are excluded from the visibility space, residents cease to understand the mechanics that provide their comfort. Proceeding from the assumption that only multifunctional objects can fully become a part of city life, the studio focused on working with several functions within one structure."

The author of the project was attracted by the former workshop of the Moscow-Kurskaya steam locomotive depot, which is now surrounded by office buildings: behind massive walls, there is a large space, which gives room for a choice of new scenarios of use. Taking into account the interests of the “target audience”, that is, office workers, and also trying to preserve the memories of the old function, Polina Romanova proposes to place a thermal complex in the former depot. This, among other things, was prompted by Pyotr Vyazemsky's poem "At Night on the Railroad", in which the poet compares the depot with a hospital for a train, that is, this is a place for "recharging" or renewal.

The volume of the entrance group is attached to the depot, and a thermal pool is located inside the workshop. The locomotive refers to different elements of water, since steam and water are its main engines. To "renew" a person, it was decided to use different aggregate states of water according to the method

The three longitudinal naves are a reference to the three aisles that were previously located here. Central - a group of pools with cold (15-18 ° C) and hot (38-40 ° C) water, which the bather alternates. One of the side naves is filled with warm water, here you can rest. And through the second side nave - return to the dressing room, where the water temperature is comfortable for swimming and there is little current. However, a visitor can violate a given scenario.

The common space of the basin is formed due to the tectonics of the bottom, repeating the natural landscape. The relief with rises and falls suggests where to swim, and where to stay - to sit or walk slowly. The domed ceiling is a reflection of the bottom: the dome is lower above the bowls with hot water, above the cold ones. The naves are connected by arches and walls, which enter into dialogue with the old arched windows of the workshop, as well as streams of water or a curtain of steam.

The main façade becomes part of the outdoor outdoor pool, which is open all year round.

Music and Silence: Singing Tower

Adi Chatovich

The author finds for an abandoned radio relay concrete tower on the northern outskirts of Moscow an unexpected and not entirely utilitarian function - a musical instrument. The tower can work on the principle of a flute: if a powerful fan is placed in the underground part, which will play the role of the musician's lips and lungs, the top is “clogged” and the windows are turned into valves. Sound comes out through the doorways, then spreads over the square with the amphitheater, the pool at the foot of the tower amplifies the sound. The valve windows are operated by the "tower musician".

The Singing Tower becomes the center of the Park of Sound and Silence, which has a centric composition regarding the propagation of sound waves. The “Temple of Music”, gazebos, a flower field, cafes and shopping pavilions turn the park into the main attraction and the main resting place for the residents of the area.

Boiler room - new basilica

Anastasia Ulyanova

Reflecting on new utilitarianism, Anastasia Ulyanova emphasizes such qualities as resource saving, recyclability, environmental friendliness, compactness, energy efficiency, versatility, plasticity and humanity (“the return of a person”).

The focus of attention is three Moscow boiler houses, outdated and already ineffective, but at the same time retaining the spirit of the place and an attractive shell. The boiler rooms showed similarities with early Christian basilicas, and not only outwardly: “as in the cathedral, the boiler room is divided into naves, steps, they raise steam from the cauldrons up to the sky, like a prayer to God. The rhythm of the columns and windows, which leads to the altar in the cathedral, sets the direction of the heat in the boiler room. It is warm and good in the boiler room, with its noise it drowns out the world around us”.

Anastasia Ulyanova has developed three programs for typical boiler houses. The first - "physical heat" - is most suitable for the boiler house on Ibragimov Street. It will grow GMO algae and process them into fuel for further heating the water. In the second type, for Ryazansky Prospect, the utilitarian function also prevails, but there is also an additional social, “warmth of the soul”: a universal space for events appears in the atrium. In the third program for the Kashirskoye Highway, “soulful” already prevails over “physical”: inside the boiler room there is a library, a cafe, a recreation area, a rehearsal room, etc. In the form of all three buildings, the image of the basilica is reinforced.

Beacon of memory

Bohdan Tepsic

The modern cemetery does not cope with the function of memory preservation. According to Bohdan Tepsic, it “should be more about life and less about death”: a marble tombstone does little to feel close to a deceased person.

For his project, the author chose the Khovanskoye cemetery. It develops spontaneously towards the forest and the field, on this border it is proposed to place a new object. The "beacon of memory" is a cone-shaped stepped structure, similar to a ziggurat. It consists of three supporting elements: concrete shells, spirals and columns, standing on the foundation.

Inside there are "memory cells": niches with windows and "window sills" on which relatives and friends leave things of the deceased, "traces" of his existence. The niche allows you to retire and immerse yourself in memories. On the opposite side of the spiral are common living rooms where "you can spend time, think, remember, drink and discuss." One of the walls in these rooms is made of light concrete, so a person standing in the amphitheater can see the silhouettes of people in the "communal apartments of memory".

Alexey Agarkov turns the warehouse complex on Dmitrovskoe highway into a data center with a Museum of Information. The project explores the place of data centers in the modern urban environment. Being in some sense anti-architecture, these urban “robots” become the junction of physical and virtual space.

Server rooms, practically devoid of human presence, will have to coexist with the townspeople in a territory that is increasingly saturated with social functions. This poses an interesting task of integrating the still "invisible" typology of the data center (against the background of its growing importance) into the urban fabric saturated with life.
