The territory of the Pluton plant is one of the historical industrial zones of Moscow; in 2017, it became part of the ARTPLAY cluster on Nizhnyaya Syromyatnicheskaya Street. At the end of the 19th century, there was a tea-packing factory of the Gubkin-Kuznetsov and Co. trade and industrial society. In 1929, the already Soviet factory was transformed into the Tochizmeritel plant named after V. M. Molotov. The Pluton plant, which specialized in the creation and development of electrovacuum devices for a wide range of applications, appeared here in the 1930s.

In the spring of 2019, the architects of DNK ag considered its territory as a practical example of the PRO intensive at the MARCH architecture school, inviting students to reflect on the example of Pluto about reconstruction, its problems, specifics and directions.

Daniil Lorenz, Natalia Sidorova, Konstantin Khodnev, DNK ag:

"Intensive Re (New)" Workshop on the reconstruction of buildings "- an educational course that we held at the MARCH school in the spring-summer of 2019. Its task was to get acquainted with the theory and practice of reconstruction on real examples, with the peculiarities of creative and practical approaches to the development of sites redevelopment ".

Daria Mineeva, co-curator of the Re (New) course, clarifies that Re (New) updates its program annually. Design cases allow you to see the whole picture, gain experience of communicating with the customer, visit the object, work out a study, discuss security restrictions with specialists, develop a socio-cultural program and present the concept to an interested party along with leading architects. In parallel, students visit construction sites and finished objects in order to "touch" and feel the process and the result, to ask all the questions of interest to the participants in the process. The unique theoretical base allows not to invent a bicycle, but to rely on the accumulated experience, transform it for the necessary tasks.

Daria Mineeva, co-curator of the Re (New) course:

“Last year, with the DNK ag team, we managed to update the program format. 12 weeks, 12 different topics from branches of practical and theoretical knowledge. Among them, acquaintance with current trends, weekly guest lecturers, general discussions, workshops, excursions and exchange of experience. Under the strict guidance of DNK ag partners, weekly project workshops were held on Sundays, bringing the project closer to its final goal. I think the most important thing is that the students were able to grasp the fine thread of the architects' approach to the project: attention to the spirit of the place, materiality, environment, literary form and detail. It is interesting that such conversations sometimes change the mind more than dozens of presentation sheets."

Natalia Sidorova and Konstantin Khodnev, teachers of the Re (New) course, admit that it was a very interesting experience for them, both architectural and pedagogical: “We had to come up with not only an interdisciplinary program, but also the teaching methodology itself. Indeed, among our students there were architects, representatives of the customer, builders and engineers … That is, as in life, the work of multidisciplinary teams was supposed. It was extremely interesting, but also difficult - after all, the skill of teamwork also had to be taught."

For the design part of the course, the site of the Pluton plant in Moscow was selected. In the course of training, four groups of students prepared projects for its development. Due to the fact that the "project" part had a real "customer", Sergey Desyatov, who is in charge of the management of the "Pluto" territory and is looking for ways of its further development, the working conditions for the students were as close to reality as possible. And the proposed solutions were considered from all points of view.

DNK ag: “Careful attitude to the industrial heritage of the Soviet period, understanding the territories through the search for its unique characteristics, which became the basis of the project, are the main principles that our students adhered to in their final works. And, despite the very tight deadlines, the works turned out, in our opinion, conceptually integral and quite realistic. One of the project teams was nominated for a trip to the youth biennale in Kazan, where the guys made a presentation of the concept of Pluto's transformation into an eco-cluster."

The work began with a comprehensive site analysis. Including both the subjective own feelings of each student, and the analysis of marketing, sociological, historical aspects. This helped to identify the potential of the site, to formulate the concept and ideology of the project.

So, the team that developed the concept of the eco-cluster, when analyzing the territory, paid great attention to the problem of landscaping, monitoring of harmful emissions and the level of noise. “All members of our team,” says Alexander Lukyanenko, “were worried that Artplay, in pursuit of customer focus, turned its entire inner territory into a parking lot. Therefore, we had an idea to create an analogue of “lungs” for the territory of the cluster and the city as a whole, where all future residents, tenants, MARSH students and just citizens could have a rest physically and emotionally”.

The developers of the digital cluster relied on the continuity of modern production. “The idea of the project was born as a result of joint discussion within our team, - Gleb Paul shares his thoughts. - At the first stage, we generated ideas: what services and infrastructure facilities may be in demand on the territory of "Pluto". Then we structured them into a few basic categories and started thinking about how they might interact. As a result, we came up with the idea of a Digital cluster in which technology and creativity harmoniously coexist."

And the team of the creative cluster was inspired by the spirit of the place. “When we went on the first excursion to the territory of the Pluton plant,” recalls Maria Pologova, “and studied in detail all the pros and cons of the site, the most vivid impression was the silence and solitude of the courtyard. Nearby there is such a noisy Artplay, and you go around the corner - and it is as if you find yourself in a secret quiet place. It is this feeling of a quiet oasis in the midst of a raging city that we tried to preserve and develop in our project. " Andrey Balan adds to his teammate: “Based on this idea, we divided the functions of space into internal and external ones. Where internal - creativity, solitude, creation. External - communications, activities, the needs of the district in infrastructure. The result is a "crispy alluring crust" which is responsible for the investment part of the project.
