The isolation period is a great time to escape to the forest house, whoever has one. Where you can walk on the lawn and look out of the window, fearing nothing and no one. And where else to look for the best "individual residential buildings" if not among the winners and nominees of the ArchiWOOD award? And now everyone is watching youtube. So that's it. we went to youtube, found videos of houses from ArchiWOOD there - the authors mainly talk about them - and we invite you to watch. Although virtual, but a walk.
House of the architect, Sergey Mishin
Quote: “For me, the window is very important, or rather, what is visible from it. I am able to stare for hours at the window, behind which nothing happens, except for the slight movement of branches."
Sergei Mishin shows the introverted house he built for himself and his family. The image was born from the attitude and memories: for example, about a trip from St. Petersburg to Amsterdam on a schooner built with his own hands. Slightly gloomy from the outside, from the inside, the house is in all respects warm and comfortable just for its owners. Sergey Mishin talks about the merits of vertical beams, the concept of a monowall, framing beautiful views with windows and the return of architecture to nature.
“Not very trendy, but true home” won the 2019 award.
House by the sea, Pine
Quote: “Can I say hello to my mom? Don't cut it out, please."
A very fresh video in which Georgy Snezhkin, in a sincere manner characteristic of the entire team of the Khvoya bureau, conducts a tour of the house designed for his parents. Full agreement with the customer allowed us to create a house that meets the principles of the bureau. The house-lighthouse, wrapped in a hooded roof, with a wooden "face" looks out to the sea, illuminating the way for the ships with its windows. Georgy Snezhkin, among other things, shows how the house is protected by shutters, wane decoration, and "mafas" created from a former Finnish cowshed.
The house by the sea became the winner of the 2017 award, this is one of the first projects implemented by the bureau.
House KINO, Le atelier
Quote: "Black is the perfect color."
A half-hour video in which Sergey Kolchin talks in detail about the construction of a house located on a forest slope. The relief gave birth to a complex structure with three semi-levels, terraces and spaces of different character, which are united by two spiral staircases. Another example of how the house was "fashioned" based on the context and characteristics of the owner. During construction, not a single healthy tree was cut down, the windows are positioned to let in soft evening light or to offer views of a particularly picturesque pine tree.
The house became the winner of the 2018 award.
House-bridge, BIO-architects
Quote: “For me, my dream is to build a house-bridge, as this is a combination of construct and function.”
Ivan Ovchinnikov, demonstrates an unusual variation of his main brainchild - DublDom. The house, literally a bridge, connects two banks, a field and a forest. It is noteworthy that the large-span structure is entirely made of wood. The "bridge" is made of standard parts and is no less suitable for habitation than representatives of other series.
The house was shortlisted for the 2019 award and received special prizes.
House of a new format, Samsonov Design
Quote: “Our task was to make it so beautiful to go out onto the terrace.”
The next hero of the collection was built for a person who has achieved everything. Ilya Samsonov's studio won the competition and designed a typical house for the PIRogovo resort near Moscow. Its main feature is hints of the elements of classical architecture, executed in wood, as well as a large veranda with an outdoor kitchen. One of the main difficulties faced by young architects is that there was no factory that could manufacture the modules. In order not to be hanged on a neighboring birch, I had to compose and test the technology on the go, while building quickly and quietly. Everything ended well; in total, PIRogovo can build from 6 to 40 such houses.
The house was longlisted for the 2019 award.
Peter Kostelov
Quote: "For cinema, for theater, and for architecture, the presence of an artistic component and imagery is important."
Pyotr Kostelov, who was a theater artist before becoming an architect, was nominated for the award several times: with "Country Origami", a house with platbands, a series of houses in Konakovo, Tver Region, designed jointly with Alexei Rosenberg. We could not find a separate video, but there is a short interview where you can take a closer look at the houses mentioned.
Totan Kuzembaev
Quote: “You come home alone or with friends, everyone takes a glass or just goes to the roof, sits down and looks at the opening landscape. The idea was a success. For this they built a house, for this we suffered. Now you can sit, watch, admire."
The review concludes with an interview with the patriarch of wooden construction, who has won the prize more than once.

In addition, since we were talking about ArchiWOOD, we asked the curator of the award, Nikolai Malinin, and this is what he thinks.
“For many years I dreamed of a new de-urbanization: how we will return to abandoned villages, restore sheds, raise weeds, take the churches back from Kizhi and other museums, build DublDoms for ourselves, take mother with seedlings, mother-in-law with a dog and live in nature with hot airphones, armed with iPhones, drones and ATVs. But this fantasy seethed, feeding on the regular contemplation of the vastness of the Russian North, the ownerlessness and homelessness of which seemed monstrous absurdity. Today, when cities are in danger, and The Day After Tomorrow seems like tomorrow, the thought of a life-saving village with eco-friendly wooden houses looks kind of wonderful. No, I, of course, am glad to see again the wonderful buildings of the winners of the ARCHIWOOD prize, and modern Russian wooden architecture still seems to me the most interesting thing that we have had in architecture over the past 20 years. But I, damn it, am not sure that humanity will be saved by scattering through the forests and sitting law-abiding bunnies in their huts. First, all the same, to unite, and then to dissociate - it was not for nothing that Lenin bequeathed the opposite."
