Sealed roof in the form of a huge pebble

New Audimax building in Leipzig thanks to Triflex liquid polymers appears in a flawless smooth shape, reminiscent of pebbles polished by the waves of the sea. For the university building located in the central part of the city, the office of the Dutch architect Erik van Egeraat designed a vaulted structure with a uniform surface. This design was achieved because the Triflex ProTect roof waterproofing system follows the curves and curves of the roof, forming a seamless seamless surface.

Waterproofing provides reliable long-term protection against weathering and moisture penetration. Benefits during construction were the high reaction rate of the liquid polymeric material based on polymethyl methacrylate resin (PMMA), the ability to work in low temperature conditions, and the smooth resumption of the waterproofing process after working breaks. The white Triflex Cryl Finish 205 is the highlight of the Audimax 800 student training center in the Neues Augusteum in Leipzig.

Since the winter semester 2012/2013, students and students have been using the largest lecture hall in the “new” federal states (formerly GDR). It is part of the New Augustum, which, together with another university building, the Paulinum, forms the university campus at Augustusplatz in Leipzig. The New Augustaum was built as part of the reconstruction of the university complex on the site of the destroyed in 1968, during the GDR, the old university church of St. Paul.

The challenge: vaulted roof with a uniform surface

The office of Erik van Egeraat has developed a convex roof and façade design for the new Audimax building with a smooth surface. The image of the building is inspired by smooth white pebbles. To achieve an organic appearance, it was necessary to completely hide all the joints of the reinforcement sheet. The architect, project investor, the state-owned Saxony Real Estate and Construction Authority, branch Leipzig II (Staatsbetrieb SIB NL Leipzig II), as well as the designers from Fischer & Werner Architekten paid special attention to the application of a certified waterproofing system.

Roof waterproofing requirements:

  • Possibility of machining after curing to create a smooth surface
  • Material in color RAL 9010
  • Ability to perform work at low temperatures and adverse weather conditions
  • Long-lasting protection against moisture penetration
  • Application of a certified waterproofing system

Solution: Triflex ProTect roof waterproofing system.

“Since the works were scheduled for fall and winter, Triflex liquid polymer waterproofing was chosen,” says Dirk Hein, Sales Manager for Triflex Central East Region. The short curing time of the Triflex ProTect roof waterproofing system allows for flawless work, even in changeable weather. The system builds up rain resistance after 30 minutes and cures completely after 45 minutes. In addition, the PMMA-based waterproofing mimics the rounded shape of the Audimax enclosure roof like a second skin. The additional waterproofing system Triflex ProDetail adheres perfectly even to vertical surfaces due to its high thixotropy, which the material has in the stock version. Therefore, both liquid waterproofing materials were ideally suited to realize the architect's vision.

Construction progress: waterproofing surfaces and units

Foamglas foam glass construction, Soprema bitumen membrane as a separating layer and Triflex liquid polymer waterproofing - in such a combination these materials "met" for the first time, so an individual approval for their use was required. After climatic tests, during which the influence of weather conditions on waterproofing was checked, the Institute for Materials Science and Construction Test Leipzig (Gesellschaft für Materialforschung und Prüfanstalt für Bauwesen Leipzig mbH) granted this approval. In order to determine the stages of the work, the contractor ASDACH GmbH, in consultation with Triflex, produced samples of the entire structure of the structure.

To ensure reliable material handling in practice, Triflex provided training to ASDACH GmbH workers prior to the start of the main work and advised them on the use of the products. Triflex external service and technicians accompanied the contractor to the job site.

In accordance with the samples, the foam glass was laid in several layers and glued over the entire surface and joints. Then the workers completed the grinding of the upper row of foam glass plates in accordance with the specified shape and laid a separating layer of bitumen membrane. Workers applied liquid waterproofing to it.

Overview of working steps when installing roof waterproofing:

• Preparation of the base: laying foam glass in several layers with continuous gluing over the entire surface and joints, grinding the upper row of plates, laying a separating layer of bitumen membrane

• Waterproofing the surface with Triflex ProTect, butt-laying reinforcement sheet

• Filling transitions and grooves with Triflex Cryl Spachtel

• Application of the second layer of Triflex ProTect with offset laying of the reinforcing sheet, butt-butt without overlap

• Waterproofing of assemblies with Triflex ProDetail (for example, anchorages for safety equipment, window fittings, ventilation shafts, foam glass gutters)

• Leveling out remaining irregularities with Triflex Cryl Spachtel

• Sealing with Triflex Cryl Finish 205 in RAL 9010

The result: long-lasting protection, a unique look

Thanks to the close cooperation between Triflex and ASDACH GmbH, the Audimax university building in Leipzig is reliably protected against moisture penetration. In addition, due to the use of liquid polymer waterproofing, it was possible to emphasize the unique geometry of the building. “The chosen waterproofing solution is unique in terms of the appearance and shape of the building and is the result of joint work. Triflex has proven itself as a reliable partner. A permanent contact has been formed between the colleagues on site and the external staff,”says Pierre Hoffbauer, Construction Manager for ASDACH GmbH. The result was a building that, both in terms of its purpose as a lecture hall, and in its unique architecture, fit perfectly into the surroundings of the university campus.
