The competition for the concept of the interiors of the State Philharmonic Society and the Arctic Center of Epic and Arts, which is being built in Yakutsk under the project of TPO "Reserve", was announced in early July 2020. Its results were summed up at the end of August: two teams, one - the Moscow URA, the other “Uran” from Yakutsk, won in different nominations. It is assumed that their ideas will be implemented in different parts of the building. We publish the projects of the winners of the competition, as well as the preliminary design of the interiors, developed earlier by the authors of the building project, TPO "Reserve".
Temple of Music
URA. GROUP
Evgeny Leonov, Tatiana Kornienko, Vahe Kazaryan, Anastasia Khoperskova, Daria Bindusova, Akulina Fedorova
The archbureau URA. GROUP, which was previously known as United Riga architects, and now, according to the authors, works in Moscow, known for the interior design of the Moscow metro station Novoperedelkino, which won the competition and was implemented, won with the project "Temple of Music" or "Spirits of Music ".
The key position of the authors of the project, expressed in the autodescription of the work, is “the musical power of the Olonkho epic can and should be interpreted in modern style, and ethnographic elements rethought and generalized”. Asserting this, the URA reinterpret and generalize, deeply immersing - not in the letter, but in the spirit - of the Yakut epic Olonkho, which architects call "the apogee and standard" among other epics, "universal and universal," "an event of a world scale."
The main theme of the project is "a rethought confrontation between the Arctic and the Eternal Summer - an allegory of the endless struggle between good and evil." Reminds me of "ice and fire" - a conceptual pair, so well manifested in the books of George Martin and perfectly suited to the continental Yakut climate. However, in this case, this is an assumption - the authors do not mention Martin at all, explaining themselves exclusively by the images of the Olonkho epic. The Arctic and Eternal Summer are embodied in the form of glassy ice with a white gradient - note that this is a well-known, if not popular, technique of modern architecture of modernism - and wood, illuminated with warm light. In the gradient glass, Evgeny Leonov and Alexander Dembo solve the staircase rails, they also clad round columns that look like thin shiny tubes cut by something hot from the ice of a deep lake: snow-white on the one side, black and a little mercury on the other. like deep clear ice.
The entire multi-tiered interior is associated with the division into the lower, middle and upper worlds inherent in the myth. “In the Upper World, we see a picture of the Arctic, where everything is white - fragile,” the authors say, placing acoustic Sonic-Chairs in the foyer of the Philharmonic to give visitors the opportunity to hear the “singing of spirits” in the moments between concerts.
According to the project, the hall of the Olonkho epic involves up to 9 transformations.
Rounded acoustic panels, designed to improve the sound inside a conical hall, are understood by the authors as clouds. Above, from the tip of the cones, diffused "divine" light emanates. The circles of uneven outlines on the floor are "either annual rings of age-old trees, or the outlines of mighty mountains."

The Sakha theater hall, according to the building's design, can either be connected to the Olonkho hall or function separately: “the hall is made in a modern style without using traditional ethnographic elements,” which made it possible to avoid “excessive color” and accentuate the unusual shape of the hall. There are many lighting scenarios.

The ritual and exhibition hall is saturated with symbols and juxtapositions as much as possible, and many lighting scenarios should serve as a tool for creating spaces that are emotionally colored in different ways. There is a portable hearth, meaning “the fire of eternal summer”, and aluminum-composite panels, symbolizing the ice of the Arctic. 360 degree projections on all walls are provided.
The luminous ring-shaped contour of the technical structure on the ceiling symbolizes the ceremonial cleansing, and the wavy ring pattern on the floor recalls the “age-old rings” of the world tree. For exhibitions, the authors propose to put forward segments of the walls into the hall space - panels measuring 3 x 4 m; when they are pulled out, behind them you can see the wooden texture of the walls of the "urasa" hall.

The project is interesting as an attempt to combine epic themes with the laconicism of modern forms, using the specifics of modern materials, acoustic panels and diverse lighting in order to create emotionally charged theatrical effects that can accompany theatrical and musical performances and enhance the impression of them, help the viewer to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of scenic and magical action. and, ultimately, to feel the significance of the ancient epic from the perspective of a modern person.

Radiance of the Middle World
Design studio "Uranus"
The second winning project is planned, as reported in the news, to be used in the design of the vestibule and the VIP-hall (while the URA project - in the foyer of the Philharmonic and the design of the halls of Olonkho, Sakha and the ritual and exhibition hall).
It refers to the old epic rather literally than metaphorically and looks less contrasting, rather "warm" due to the predominance of natural wood and reddish tones. In the vestibule, the authors place rounded benches in the form of large "pebbles" painted with ornaments, build arched ribs of light wood in front of the walls, install a stela-sail in the center, wooden on one side, and mirrored on the other, equipped with a media screen.

The interior of the ritual hall in the project reproduces in wood the conical structure of a traditional dwelling and a temple; in the center there is a semblance of an altar with a canopy.

Preliminary project / did not participate in the competition
TPO "Reserve"
The authors of the project for the building of the Philharmonic and the Arctic Center developed the interior design a little earlier, and it was provided to the participants of the competition as a "preliminary" one. The interior of "Reserva" is rather white and very laconic, enlivened by the openwork pattern of vertical "beads" lines, made up of round rapports, partly ornamental, partly geometrical, which echo the design of the facade. The outer walls of the theater and philharmonic halls are wooden and also covered with decorative stripes; on the floor of the lobby - the spiral of the ancient calendar. Here are some illustrations, you can get acquainted with the project in greater volume here.
