The idea competition, organized by the Volume Zero platform, challenged participants to revise the current design principles of public toilets. It was proposed to endow them with additional socially significant functions and turn them into a means of visual enrichment of the urban environment.
The place for the proposed location of the object could be chosen at your discretion, but it was also necessary to ensure the universality of the project, to provide for the possibility of its implementation at other sites. Estimated attendance of toilets is 250-500 people per day.
All prizes went to teams from India. We show the projects of the winners.
First place
The project aims to improve the working conditions of migrants involved in construction sites, and also aims to provide their children with the supervision and opportunity to learn, which they often find themselves deprived of. Thus, people have a kind of piece of home away from their homeland. The authors offer three types of pre-fabricated and easily replicated multifunctional structures, depending on the number of workers and the estimated duration of construction.

The project, conceived for Worli in the Mumbai metropolitan area, creates entertaining and sustainable spaces for people of all ages, professions and interests. The authors set themselves the task of providing the local community with good sanitary conditions, the opportunity to relax, get an education, and even earn money.
Third place
Designed for the Indian artisan village of Raghurajpur, this toilet offers open sanitation units to local residents with varying degrees of privacy. In this unusual way, on the one hand, the traditions and habits of local residents are supported, on the other hand, a respectful and “responsive” environment with freedom of choice is created.
