The Wilkinson Air bureau project will significantly save passenger time and fuel for buses that carried them to Pier 6 earlier. Now you can easily get to 11 direct exits to the aircraft: the bridge will replace 50,000 bus trips a year.
The size of the structure is sufficient to completely block the taxiway, along which the largest passenger liner in the world today, the Boeing 747-400, can pass.
The total length of the bridge is 197 m, the width of the main span is 128 m, and its height is 22 m. Thus, it is the largest such structure in the world.
According to the architects, the ability to pass over the airplanes passing through the airfield will attract passengers to Pier 6. To provide them with maximum visibility, the bridge is glazed from floor to ceiling. Its curved shape contributes to greater structural strength.
During the construction process, the bridge was assembled in a vacant lot near the main airport building, and then moved to its permanent place. Engineering calculations were performed by Arup specialists.
