The Alef residential area and cultural institutions will appear on the shores of La Plata Bay. This is Foster's first project for Latin America.
The site for the construction will be the former industrial area of Puerto Madero, where port facilities were also located. It borders the financial center of the Argentine capital, so the new quarter will easily become the public, commercial and cultural hub of Buenos Aires. He will also connect the flow of urban life to the coast of the bay.
The project involves both the construction of new buildings and the reconstruction of old ones. It contains plans for three residential areas based on the local architectural tradition of courtyards and outdoor terraces. It is also planned to erect a club building on an artificial island, as well as a hotel with 100 rooms.
In the center of the quarter there will be a large square with a covered market, under which a cultural center will be arranged. It will also house art galleries, shops and cafes.
Construction is expected to be completed by 2010 - the bicentennial of the Argentine Republic.
