It envisions the creation of a new downtown New York borough that will include shops, residential and office buildings and, most importantly, a new basketball stadium for the New Jersey Nets. The planned structures will occupy the area of three standard blocks next to Atlantic Station.
One of Gehry's intentions was to create a complex that attracts attention and defines the perception of the entire surrounding development. Here you can also see the urban planning "drama", comparable to the "direction" of the architects of the Baroque era.
Instead of being isolated in the middle of a huge car park, the stadium will be incorporated into the very flesh of the quarter. Office towers will be located around. A jogging track will be arranged along the perimeter of the arena's roof; in winter it will turn into a skating rink. The rooftop stadium, which seats 20,000, will feature a garden designed by renowned landscape architect Lori Olin.
