Rotterdam Feyenord, one of the leading clubs in the Netherlands, has played since 1937 at its own stadium of the same name, nicknamed "De Kuyp" ("tub", "tub" or even "tub"). Despite its glorious history, these days this arena no longer met modern requirements, therefore, over the past ten years, the possibility of rebuilding it or replacing it with a new stadium has been actively discussed.
The now officially approved Feyenord City plan, which OMA began to develop in 2016, differs from its predecessors in the breadth of its concept: in addition to the multifunctional arena - the largest in the country and meeting all UEFA requirements - a whole range of measures are provided for the development of the Feyenord district (it was he who gave the name club) and the larger Rotterdam-South area, which needs renovation and investment.
The new stadium for 63,000 spectators (78 thousand m2) will be erected, as planned, by 2023, and partly over the water - the Meuse River. As the architects explain, the "DNA" of "De Kuyp" will be preserved in it: it will be a bowl of tribunes, suitable for the field itself. In addition to football matches, including meetings with the participation of the national team, concerts and congresses are planned there. Around the landscape architects LOLA will create a public space with views of the stadium, the river and the panorama of Rotterdam. The project takes into account a limited budget, influenced by the recent increase in construction costs in the Netherlands, and an optimized business model.
After reconstruction, De Kuyp will accommodate apartments, commercial spaces, a sports center and a public square. Around both arenas, the De Kuyp park will be set up for sports and recreation, and residential buildings will also appear there. The "3D" pedestrian zone "De Strip" will connect both stadiums, public and commercial spaces and parking lots. The “City Bridge” will be built to the nearby Lahn op Zuid highway. As a social measure, the Feyenord Club plans to establish a multisport club for residents of the Rotterdam South area and to work with the surrounding areas to promote sports.
Overall, Feyenord City plans to build 255,000 m2 of housing, 64,000 m2 of commercial space (cinema, restaurants, hotels, hotels) and 83,000 m2 of public programs ('sports experience center', sports grounds, etc.).
