The architects proposed to arrange new exhibition halls under the garden of the museum ensemble. At ground level, the structure will look like a rectangular lawn with a low hill in the middle, cut by symmetrical rows of round windows through which sunlight will enter the underground galleries. Also, the reconstruction project involves a general "consolidation" of the existing museum buildings (the main building of the Shtedelev Museum, or the Art Institute was erected in 1878 and since then has been supplemented many times with various buildings, which negatively affected the clarity of the architectural composition).

At the same time, various "historical layers" of the complex will be preserved, and the museum areas will be supplemented with new halls of 3000 sq. m - for the exhibition of works of art created after 1945. Thanks to the elegant and discreet design of the Schneider + Schumacher workshop, one of the most important German museums will not only retain its architectural "authenticity", but will also become even more attractive to visitors: they will be able to look inside through the rounded "windows" in the lawn before visiting the galleries " Shtedelevsky Garden ".

The reconstruction of the museum should begin in late 2008 - early 2009, and a new - underground - wing should open at the end of 2010. The second place in the architectural competition was shared by Kühn Malvezzi and Gigon / Guyer.
