At the same time, construction began on this facility - the first of the entire Campus of Justice. Like all other buildings in this ensemble, the Institute has a round plan. This is especially important for its function, says its architect Alejandro Zaero-Polo, because this institution will, in fact, perform the functions of a morgue. The building will not only be rounded in plan, but will also receive a spherical shape, complemented by a round atrium in the center, since it is this geometric figure that symbolizes death in the cultural tradition of many peoples.
The building, including the courtyard, will be fully clad in dark metal panels. Inside, on an area of 14,000 sq. m will be staffed by pathologists and forensic specialists; the Institute's laboratories are designed for the simultaneous examination of 250 bodies - in the event of a major disaster. Also, the project includes protection against the spread of infection both along the building and beyond.
According to the authors, the project reflects the seriousness and even tragedy of the building's function and the emotional tension associated with it.
The institute will open in 2009.
