The new cultural institute is located in the famous Velasquez town of Breda. Its architect was Hans van Heswijk, the author of the project for the Hermitage branch in Amsterdam.

As in the case of the Hermitage, it was faced with the task of transforming a 17th century hospital and almshouse building into an exhibition complex - however, on a much more modest scale.

This architectural monument was complemented by a glass and steel annex, which houses a museum shop and administrative premises. The principle of contrast, which unites the two parts of the museum complex, continues in the interior of the historic building: its bright halls with an emphasized modern design of the exposition contrast with the brick and white stone of the facades. All galleries are distinguished by the restraint of color and decor, which makes it easy to adapt them for any new exhibition.

Due to the small size of the 17th century building. and the inconvenient configuration of the site for new development, van Heswijk had to supplement the museum with a spacious underground floor, where, in addition to three exhibition halls, an auditorium with 100 seats and a storeroom were located. The complex also includes an educational center and a graphic design and printing studio.

The tour ends on the museum's wide rooftop terrace, where visitors can relax.
