The new "Kaufhaus Tyrol" will appear in the historical part of the city, on Maria Theresien Strasse. To avoid the dissonance of the building with the surrounding buildings, the architect divided its main, extended facade, which is a load-bearing structure made of stone-faced concrete, into three vertical sections located at a slight angle to each other. The central one protrudes slightly forward: the main entrance to the store is located in it, and it is also it that faces the center of the Old Town and is visible in the perspective of the street leading there.
The store will occupy the whole block where the old "Kaufhaus Tyrol" was located, built at the beginning of the 20th century and badly damaged during Kristallnacht and World War II. A five-story atrium will be built in its center, and the second facade of the building, facing the adjacent street, will include the restored Schindlerhaus, a 16th century residential building. The latter will be converted into an office building, and the famous Schindler Cafe will reopen on its ground floor. The back facade of the store itself will be sheathed with anodized aluminum panels.
Completion is scheduled for 2010: then the 58,000 Kaufhaus Tyrol will become the largest department store in Tyrol.
