He was commissioned to create a new master plan for the complex, the core of which is the museum building, built in 1986 by Renzo Piano and considered one of the best works of this architect (in particular, it was thanks to him that Piano became one of the most popular authors of projects for cultural institutions in the United States). Around there are residential buildings of different times, bought by the museum from the previous owners, painted gray to match the main building and used as art workshops.
Now it is planned to supplement this ensemble with new exhibition premises, a graphics institute, an auditorium, a cafe, a bookstore and archives, as well as create a new landscape design concept for its territory.
The museum management attracted in working with David Chipperfield his openness to dialogue and flexibility of ideas. Five other participants in the competition will also not be left without work: they will be entrusted with the design of individual buildings within the framework of the master plan.
