The master plan of the Regium Embankment, named after the city's Roman name, involves the construction of two large-scale buildings and the creation of a new public space around them. Now it is an undeveloped area opposite the city station, cut off from the rest of the city by railways. The project involves the establishment of underground passages under them and the creation of a direct connection between the embankment space and the Villa Kommunale park, located in the city center (it is supposed, if possible, to remove all existing "barriers" on the streets connecting these two points).
The main place in the new ensemble will be occupied by the Mediterranean Museum. Its volume, reminiscent of a starfish, will serve as a location for exhibition halls, a library, restoration workshops and an archive. A dock and a marina for motor boats and yachts will be arranged under it.
The second "starfish" - a multifunctional complex - will include a sports center, a cinema and three auditoriums of different capacities, which can be used both for conferences and for performances and concerts.
The new embankment and its buildings will be clearly visible across the Strait of Messina - from the coast of Sicily, and will also become a reference point for ships entering the city port.
