The plans for the construction of a new building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland have been engaged for two years in the framework of the general program of renovation of embassy complexes around the world. All new projects were supposed to adequately represent their country abroad, becoming a kind of "showcase" for Finland.
All the more responsible was the assignment to design the embassy complex in Japan, a country known for its close attention to issues of architecture and design. The situation was also complicated by the fact that it was required to combine several different functions in one building, remaining within the framework of not only local building legislation, but also a very modest budget (diplomats decided to build a new building without seeking special funding from the government). The architects of Lakhdelma & Mahlamyaki were able to successfully solve this multi-part problem, while successfully fitting the new building into the plot of the embassy. The project is based on a modular system that allows the complex to be expanded and rebuilt in the future.
According to architect Rainer Mahlamäki, with his work he tried to create an image of real Finland.
