It will be the second of its kind in this Scottish city (the first Maggie Center was built there in 2002 by Page / Park); it will be erected next to the new building of the Beatson Cancer Center.
The purpose of the new building, like all other Maggie Centers, will be to support - informational and psychological - patients with cancer, as these aspects are not sufficiently implemented within the UK National Health System. Therefore, the main thing for the architects was to create a pleasant, calm atmosphere in the building, filled with light and at the same time a cozy interior space. Rectangular in plan, elongated rooms are built in a ring around a courtyard with a garden, where visitors can temporarily escape from their heavy worries. All landscaping for the Center will be done by Lily Jenks, daughter of Charles Jenks and Maggie Kezwick Jenks (in memory of the last Maggie Centers got their name).
City officials have already approved Koolhaas's project. Construction should begin in January 2010 and finish in spring 2011. The construction budget is 2.1 million pounds.
