The Sirkelbroen ("Circular Bridge") across the Christianshavn canal will appear in the area of the same name, famous for its many waterways and sailing traditions.
This tradition became a source of inspiration for the artist, who equipped the bridge with several masts and a kind of rigging. The bridge is 32 m long and consists of several circles arranged in a double arc. Since pedestrians and cyclists will not be able to rush to the opposite bank in a straight line, they may stop along the way to admire the views of Christianshavn. At least this is what Eliasson is counting on when he tried to turn the bridge into a full-fledged public space in his project.
Since the canals of Copenhagen are always full of water transport of different sizes, the bridge can be pulled apart for the passage of medium and large vessels.
Sirkelbroen is due to open in 2012. The Nordea Charitable Foundation acts as the developer: the bridge will be its gift to Copenhagen.
