The architect, known for his environmentally friendly and easy-to-implement projects for disaster-affected areas, presented his first plan to the city authorities in the summer of 2009: then it was not only about the concert hall, but also the new building of the conservatory. The project was supposed to use the metal frame of the unfinished structure, the construction budget was half provided by the Japanese government as part of humanitarian aid, the other half Ban was going to collect himself, also refusing the fee. Students of the architectural faculties of local and foreign universities were to take part in the implementation of the project as workers. The building was supposed to be built in July - September 2009, and the opening was scheduled for November.
But then the difficulties began. According to University of Aquila professor Aldo Benedetti, who participated in the preparation of the plan, the city authorities showed complete indifference to the Ban project, complete anarchy reigned in coordination issues, and no one officially supervised the project from the Civil Defense forces involved in the restoration of the city. therefore, construction never began.
But Shigeru Ban did not abandon his intentions: he presented to the authorities a simplified project - only a concert hall (the building of the conservatory will be occupied by GO according to its own plan), and not for 600 seats, as was originally supposed, but for only 230. It will be a square building in plan. with a side of 25 m, with a metal pyramidal roof supported by round cardboard supports and walls made of transparent plastic. An oval hall with walls made of a metal frame filled with sandbags will be inscribed in the inner space. The outside will be wrapped in a plastic "acoustic curtain". The space between the walls of the hall and the outer walls of the building will be occupied by the foyer and dressing rooms.
The construction will employ students from local and Harvard universities, as well as Tokyo's Keio University. The project is planned to be implemented this year. After the end of use, the building will be dismantled and moved to another location.
