In November 2010, the final stage of the emergency reconstruction of St. Andrew's Church in Kiev, one of the wonders of the world and symbols of the city, began. The project started in August 2009 due to the rapid slide of the historical monument down. DuPont ™ Typar geosynthetics were used in the construction of the retaining drainage system of the walls® due to its high strength and excellent water permeability, which was necessary to guarantee the long-term reliability of the structure.

St. Andrew's Church was built in the middle of the 18th century according to the project of FB Rastrelli. Landslides on the hilly slopes have been the main threat to the church for many years. To preserve the monument, the slope was "fortified" by planting trees with deep and branched root systems. To prevent the church from slipping, on August 14, 2009, according to the project of the design bureau "Ukrproektrestavratsiya", an urgent reconstruction of the building was started.

By this time, the construction company "Osnova - Solsif" had installed reinforcing piles (1020 mm in diameter) in the reinforced concrete base, making the basis for the retaining structure. The slope of the hill where St. Andrew's Church is located suffered from erosion, so the historical characteristics of the landscape had to be restored. As a result of the work done, the slope of the soil was reduced, and a drainage system was made.

Water drainage plays an important role in the reconstruction of the object, since during heavy rainfall, water can increase the creep of the soil and make the restraining wall unstable to destruction of the territory of St. Andrew's Church. This is where the DuPont ™ Typar was needed®! For the construction of the drainage complex, 2,400 square meters of DuPont ™ Typar geotextiles were required® SF 49 and step by step lined with finely studded geosynthetics. DuPont ™ Typar® also prized for its excellent water permeability, so the same set of materials was used to replace the porch pavement and waterproof the interior. All work will be completed by the end of 2010.

The reconstruction of St. Andrew's Church is not the first project in Kiev, where the excellent qualities of DuPont ™ Typar material were used to preserve historical monuments®… Previously 405 m2 DuPont ™ Typar® SF 40 in combination with fine-studded geosynthetics was used to solve the drainage problem in the restoration of the Golden Gate of Kiev.

DuPont ™ Typar® (www.typargeo.com) is a thermally bonded nonwoven geotextile made from endless 100% polypropylene fibers. It has high strength and excellent water permeability and is one of the best known and widely used high quality materials for road construction, drainage, inversion roofing and landscaping.

DuPont ™ Typar Geotextiles® are compressed and therefore thinner and lighter than conventional needle-punched geotextiles, allowing less storage capacity and easier material handling. Besides DuPont ™ Typar® easy to cut - using a knife or scissors (for cutting into small pieces) or a chain saw (for cutting material in rolls).
