The project with a budget of 41 million euros was developed by Peter Schweger. According to him, the main building in the Art Nouveau style, built in 1912-1915 by KO Reichelt, was carefully restored. Its courtyard is now covered with a glass roof and has been adapted into a lobby. Such a measure will make it easier to control the level of temperature and humidity inside the building. Around the formed "atrium" 21 m high, on the first and second floors, there is a distribution area for materials, places for reading and consultations.
The historic reading room now has an auditorium for 100 people / exhibition space: the archive regularly hosts exhibitions and conferences. For the sake of these events, a second entrance was added to the building so that they would not interfere with the daily work of the institution.
Next to the main building there is a historical administrative building, which now also belongs to the archive, and near the latter - a new storehouse. This is a rectangular block of light bricks: 6 of its floors are above the ground, 3 are basements. The building is distinguished by its extraordinary strength: it contains 46 km of shelves with documents dating from the 10th century. to the present day. It is also the first public building in the Passivhaus format in Saxony.
