It was a strange role for wallet architects to be present during the last days of the USSR and to comprehend this agony at a young age
From the interview to the magazine "I-Architect":
- Tom, what memories do you have from your student years in the USSR?
T. NUDGENT:
I graduated from Markhi, and that was in the 76th year. I studied in the group of Ilya Georgievich Lezhava at the city planning faculty - the most advanced at that time. Experiments on extreme settlement systems were carried out at the faculty. And we made a project for a city in the far north. The idea was that the whole city is one giant house. The result was a glass box in which there was housing and workplaces and entertainment and green lawns. The very structure of this house resembled the structure of funnels covered with a glass cover. It was a self-sufficient settlement unit that was quite advanced at the time. I adored the Moscow Architectural Institute, not because I was taught there, but for this wonderful environment where you meet many talented people. And this is the most important thing! And it's also great that these people become your best friends for all the years to come..
- What, in your opinion, is the quintessence of our profession?
T. NUDGENT:
What is an "architect"? This is, first of all, a building designer, but not only. He is a DESIGNER in the broadest sense of the word, a designer of life. And for this you need to know not only the design and materials, but also much more about the life of people. What is called FUNCTION is not just work, housing and service, it is a relationship between people. Of course, it is easier to teach a student how to build a wall and a roof than to immerse him in the problems of social context. A peek behind this shell: why is this building needed at all? How long should it last? Is it moving in space? Maybe it should change color?
