How Adobe PostScript works

When you select Print, your computer's printer driver automatically generates a PostScript language file describing the size and style of the page on which the graphics should be placed and how the color is applied. In other words, the PostScript language file tells the printer how to paint the pixels of the document onto the page.

Once sent to the printer, the PostScript language file is processed by a built-in raster image processor (RIP). An Adobe PostScript-enabled RIP translates your application's instructions, optimizes the PostScript language file to suit the needs of your printer, and creates an array of pixels, called a bitmap, that is sent to the device for printing exactly as intended by the original application. And all this is done in the blink of an eye.

Typical features of the Adobe PostScript 3 language include the following.

  • Advanced multithreaded rendering techniques deliver up to 30% performance improvements.
  • Supports advanced PDF (Portable Document Format) and JDF (Job Definition Format) formats, enabling you to take advantage of the latest document creation and processing technologies.
  • In-RIP trapping and PDF trapping functions automatically interpret and execute trapping commands, increasing throughput.
  • Device-independent colors make your prints look exactly the way they want.
  • PostScript 3 systems receive data in a variety of formats (Adobe PDF 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, PDF / X, and JPEG 2000) for maximum workflow flexibility.
  • Intelligent image processing makes it much easier to maintain transparent images.

Why HP Designjet with Adobe PostScript?

The intelligent new capabilities of HP Designjet technology, coupled with the powerful performance of the Adobe PostScript 3 RIP software, make it easy to create spectacular prints.

Many printer manufacturers use emulated PostScript as a less expensive alternative to Adobe's royalties. HP includes only native Adobe PostScript in its Designjet products to ensure high quality throughout the printing process.

  • Versatility. Easily and efficiently process complex documents, technical drawings, diagrams, floor plans of buildings, projects, maps, diagrams, PDF, JDF, CAD and other files.
