Basically, this is a building at the turn of the 1930s - 40s, expanded in 1968: then the stadium received an upper tier - an openwork concrete structure, which doubled the capacity of the stands: up to 100,000 people. In the newly completed rebuilding, the stadium acquired a glass façade, which the gmp architects compare to a showcase for this delicate structure. At the same time, the number of spectator places has now decreased to 68 thousand.
Also preserved as an element of the complex is the stadium stylobate, now adapted to accommodate cafes and shops; its existence is due to the uneven terrain. Now wide terraces connected the structure with the surrounding urban spaces.
But the main part of the reconstruction was the new roof. The ceilings, clearly separated from the existing "bowl" of the arena, are a membrane. The lattice supporting it is brought out to the outside of the stadium.
The 45,000 m2 Teflon membrane contains 640 transparent "skylight domes" that provide natural daylight to the stands. As a result, the floors are also perceived as openwork, emphasizing this motive in the arena solution.
