The competition is held on a grand scale: first of all, Pritzker Prize winners and gold medal winners of the International Union of Architects, RIBA, AIA were invited to participate. The organizer was the Committee for Sports of Japan, the jury was chaired by Tadao Ando, and included Norman Foster and Richard Rogers.
The jury selected 11 out of 46 projects submitted for the competition, which, in its opinion, have the potential of a "new era" architecture. Finalists include Zaha Hadid, Toyo Ito, UNStudio, SANAA, gmp.
The stadium will replace the arena erected in Tokyo for the 1964 Olympics. Its construction will be completed in 2018, and in 2019 it will host the Rugby World Cup matches. But organizers of the competition hope that Japan will host the 2020 Olympic Games, for which a new arena is needed. The stadium will also be used for football and athletics championships, concerts and other social and cultural events.
The main task of the competition is to find a project that exceeds modern standards for sports facilities and offers a completely new approach to their creation. In addition to the short terms for the project implementation, the relatively narrow section for the stadium for 80,000 spectators, the need for a convertible roof and stands (so that the arena is suitable for a variety of events and all weather conditions), environmental requirements, context (proximity to the Meiji shrine) are also difficult.
