The building with a total area of 8 thousand m2 is officially called a correctional institution, and nothing else. It will be built in the island's capital, Nuuk, and will be named Ny Anstalt. The architects set themselves the task of rethinking the very typology of the penitentiary, the style of which is usually given much less attention than inaccessibility. However, this does not mean that SHL forgot about safety in their project - on the contrary, the Danes promise that it will be impossible to escape from the correctional institution they have invented.
As the authors themselves explain, they based their project on the principle of creating the most comfortable environment that has a beneficial effect on the people in it and thereby contributes to their re-education. The harsh nature of Greenland should become the main assistant in this difficult task: the prison buildings harmoniously inscribed in the mountain slope are designed as a kind of observation points for the landscape. The central element of the entire composition is a relaxation room with a panoramic window facing the snow-covered mountain slopes. Most of the cells (in total, the prison can simultaneously contain up to 76 prisoners) also have windows, from which the rocky landscape appears at a glance.
The hulls themselves are assembled from parallelepipeds of different sizes, which the architects revet with steel - a material whose texture and color match the laconic northern landscape as best as possible. In the interior decoration, in turn, it is supposed to use concrete and natural wood.
