At the same time, the winner of the "popular" vote for the best project of the Competition will be presented, in which everyone can take part via the Internet. In addition, during all days of the exhibition, it will be possible to get acquainted with the works of the laureates and nominees, as well as personally meet with the architects and team members who created these magnificent world-class works.
We continue to present the works of the finalists of the Competition and, regardless of the place and rating, the works of the Russian participants in the Competition.
Splendor in the Dolomites by PlasmaStudio, Italy
The building is located on a mountainside in the Dolomites on the outskirts of a residential area. The interior space was designed primarily with a pragmatic functional requirement to arrange 6 independent apartments around the traffic flow in the building: this was achieved with a "cut", through which the main entrance is highlighted and the interior space is divided into 2 halves. In addition to its functionality, the "cut" has become the main distinguishing element of the building: on each side of the "cut" horizontal stripes unfold, which forms the balustrade of the covered balcony, which visually integrates into the geometry of the surrounding space. Both the visible stripes and the entire facade recede backward with each successive floor, creating a profile of the natural slope of the mountain.
6 magnificent apartments are located in the building in such a way as to get the maximum effect from the sun and panoramic views of the Dolomites. Each individual block is designed in such a way as to provide residents with maximum privacy: by dividing the entire internal space of the building into 2 parts, and thanks to stepped balustrades that protect from uninvited views from the upper floors and from the street. Each apartment has a sun terrace, which both increases the living space and leads to a small secluded garden hidden on each floor. Larch is the hallmark of both indoor and outdoor living spaces. The south-facing floor-to-ceiling glazed part of the apartment maximizes the breathtaking views and sunshine, while the external 'brisesoleil' system and protruding balconies minimize the possibility of overheating in summer.
The emphasis is on the design of the brass balustrades. It seems that they protrude and grow directly from the surrounding nature, and attach to the building in the place where the "cut" defines the volume, and then peel off and merge again with the outlines of the surrounding nature. When "peeling", the metal plates, which are divided into horizontal stripes, form a curved curve, demonstrating the absolute top of the craftsmanship of the installers. Dark, pre-oxidized copper surrounds the volume on all sides. The stripes also form layers that allow the roof to be an extension of the entire façade and volume.
The shape of the roof is dictated by the requirements of local planning, which allows the construction of an exclusively pitched roof on a specific building site. Slightly deformed, it fits into the concept of the project, as well as into the traditional typology of pitched roofs, not just repeating, but offering new possibilities of the traditional typology.
Materials (edit)
The location on the outskirts of a residential area, the appearance of which does not harmonize with the appearance of the building, prompted the architects to shift the emphasis of the project to contrast, creating a simple volume that grows out of the outlines of the surrounding nature and merges with it. This was achieved by reducing the range of materials to exclusively local, almost iconic in the area: larch and pre-oxidized copper. Both copper and larch are intensely exposed to the sun, rain and snow, but, unlike many other materials, they show unprecedented resistance to these destructive forces. By echoing the color scheme of nearby old farmhouses, with their dark, faded larch facades, the new building blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings.

Roof reconstruction, former apartment building on the embankment, from SAVROS, Moscow
"Absolute quality is the only criterion for performing work" likes to repeat Nikolai Savchenko - a genius of the craft and founder of the Savros company from Rossosh, in the Voronezh region. Masterwork with patinated copper on flat and spherical surfaces may seem ordinary to someone, but only if this “someone” is far from the roofing business. Nicholas' favorite material is copper. Copper sheet has been used for roofing for many centuries. To cover the domes, the shape of the sheets was different - diamond-shaped, scaly small-sized metal sheets. Spheres are the hardest part of metal roofing. In the field of piece roofing surfaces, executed by the technique of "rhombus", "checker", "scales" Nikolay and Ruslan Savchenko, most likely, simply have no equal. Having gone through a craft school in Germany and Italy, having independently created unique seaming machines for the most typical jobs, the Savchenko family team, in the opinion of venerable German and Italian craftsmen, creates an ideal roof from metal tiles. Savros-style copper tiles are invariably cut and assembled from a single raw material - a roll of copper, and the result can be seen on the roof of a building on the embankment opposite the Kremlin, now occupied by the state-owned company Rosneft, and many others where, due to their status, compromise solutions are not acceptable.
Popular vote
Everyone has the opportunity to choose their favorite project of the Competition "Copper in European Architecture" within the framework of the "popular vote". Choose your favorite project from among the finalists. At the same time, you will get a chance to win an iPad mini: everyone who voted automatically becomes a participant in the drawing of this gadget.
Only registered users on the www.copperconcept.org website will be able to vote. The "People's Vote" will end on October 31, 2013, and the building (project) the winner of such a vote will be announced at the award ceremony for the winners of the "Copper in European Architecture 2013" Competition on November 4, 2013 at the BATIMAT inset in Paris. The iPad mini will be announced on the website, and the winner will be personally notified by e-mail.
The exhibition will be held 04.11.2013 - 08.11.2013 in the pavilions ParisNordVillepinte.
