On Tuesday, November 19, the expert jury of the competition named the best design project for the reconstruction of the sanitary zone in Izmailovsky Park - the winner was the “deciduous” project of Alexander Tomashenko. The second and third places were taken by Roman Pasoshnikov and Alina Abdrakhmanova, respectively. And the special prize of the International School of Design was awarded to the work of Evgeny Shirchkov, Andrey Kurganov, Sergey Sunyaikin and Elvira Khusiyanova. In addition, a vote was organized on the competition website, according to the results of which the work of Margarita Chechulina received the audience award.
Participants in the Art Perestroika competition needed to create an Art Toilet in the Izmailovsky Park of Culture and Leisure. In addition to the mandatory functional elements: the presence of male and female departments, a toilet for people with disabilities, a mother and child room, ramps, it was necessary to think over the improvement of the adjacent territory. According to the organizers, the design project of the participants should reflect the mood of the park, become an organic continuation of its landscape design and introduce fresh architectural solutions.
We publish the works of the finalists of the competition with author's descriptions, as well as the works awarded with special prizes, and we remind you that the competition was organized by the Swedish brand Ifö and Sanitec with the support of the International School of Design and the Higher School of Environmental Design MARCHI.
1st place. Alexander Tomashenko
“The building is literally buried in trees, there is a feeling of forest dominance over the building. We decided to go further and literally dissolve the object in the environment. Without touching the existing facade, we erect the second of the metal plates (polished stainless steel), which are attached to the existing one on spiders. Shapes of tree trunks are cut from metal sheets to reflect the natural surroundings of the park. It turns out a symbiosis of architecture and nature. The adjacent territory has been refurbished: at the entrance there is a bench and a bicycle parking. The paths are paved with paving slabs.
The entrances to the bathrooms are proposed to be transferred to the front facade, using the existing window as a new entrance opening. The result is a single entrance to the building. In the common area there are entrances: to the men's and women's toilets, to the bathroom for people with disabilities, to the utility room, there are also vending machines and a swaddling table."
2nd place. Roman Pasoshnikov
“The toilet is not like a faceless box, but as a multifunctional object that works for the visitor not only inside, but also outside: the external walls not only perform load-bearing and enclosing functions, but also serve as a storage place for small items that we take with us to the park: books, rollers, skates … How to provide this? It is very simple: hang the structure of horizontal shelving and dismember everything with vertical partitions, you get a facade-shelf. Shelf height - 300 mm, width - 900 mm, depth - 250 mm.
The bottom mark of this hinged shelf is at the level of the person's seat + 400mm. Facade elements can also be used as seats: hollow wooden cells are located under the shelf, at the right time they can be taken out and placed around the structure. The shelves (not all, so as not to close the window openings) are provided with transparent doors to prevent damage due to weather precipitation and wind."
3rd place. Alina Abdrakhmanova
“The project represents a new vision of a public toilet in a park area. The object is functionally divided into several zones. The men's and women's sections have a waiting area, and the women's section also houses a mother and child's room and a room for storing household chemicals and cleaning equipment. The disabled toilet has a separate entrance and a ramp.
The flows of cyclists and pedestrians do not intersect due to the division of the adjacent territory into two zones. The plastic of the facades was solved in a non-standard way: a bicycle parking is integrated into it. The simplicity of the facade solution is harmoniously combined with the overall architectural style of the park.
Finishing materials: beige mesh plaster, glued wooden lamellas made of glued laminated timber, cut according to a sketch. The pedestrian area is paved with paving slabs and the cyclists area is paved."
Special Prize of the International School of Design

“The projected public toilet is located a short distance from the Great Circle Alley of Izmailovsky Park. A dilapidated path leads to it from the side of the alley, leading to one of the entrances to the object. In our proposal, we get rid of this connection and punch the toilet through with one path, which is separated from the secondary path of the park.
The new toilet has an elliptical shape. The reconstruction involves the dismantling of the roof, two end walls and partitions of the existing facility. Two longitudinal walls remain from it, which continue from a similar brick, forming an internal passage. It is also a waiting area where trees are planted. The fence of the flower bed of one of them serves as a bench. On either side of the aisle, there is a men's and women's section with all the accompanying rooms. The cubicles in the compartments are separate, each of them is round in plan, equipped with a toilet bowl, a sink and all the appropriate accessories. The cabin ends with a skylight.
The outer walls are made of a wooden frame filled with translucent insulation, lined with transparent polycarbonate. Outside, the walls are additionally clad with white wooden slats. The roof is flat, with holes for lanterns and trees. Lanterns and booths are made of metal. The hole in the lantern is sewn up with a polycarbonate sheet. The floor is self-leveling, the booths are made of ceramic tiles."
People's Choice Award

“The overall configuration of the facility is designed in such a way that the building is a logical continuation of the environment. Illuminated boardwalks run off the main road. Each decking leads to separate entrances to the male and female parts of the toilet and adjoins a common bicycle parking area, above which information is located.
The toilet is divided into two symmetrical mirrored parts, connected by a technical room, which can be accessed from both zones. Both the male and female halves have a waiting area, vending machines and seating. Both parts have a cabin for people with disabilities. The women's section is equipped with a changing table.
Each part is made with its own color accents: green - for men and orange - for women, the general background color is white. Floor-length mirrors visually expand the space and improve sun exposure. In addition to the windows in the upper part along the perimeter, built-in lights are provided. The turf under the washbasins continues the theme of the park's ecology. Rounded shapes contribute to the safety of visitors. Also, all areas are equipped with handrails, and the walkways are designed taking into account the size of baby and wheelchairs."
