Monument at the DMZ in Korea. Photo: www.korea-discovery.com Issues of ideology and power have always been reflected in architecture. However, today forces are shifting towards public interests and the question arises: can architecture seriously affect the peaceful resolution of political and religious conflicts?

The theme of this year's architectural competition is “The Age of Politicized Space: What to Do for Peace at the DMZ”.

The DMZ is a demilitarized zone that divides the Korean Peninsula in two: the North (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) and the South (Republic of Korea). The area, 4 kilometers wide and 241 kilometers long, is the last "relic" of the Cold War in the world.

Students need to create a complex of viewing platforms (at least 3 platforms) in this demilitarized zone. Where exactly to place the sites and, accordingly, what kind of view will open from them is up to the contestants. It is important that the concept of the project contains a “spirit of peace” capable of establishing balance and harmony in the political, social and economic spheres.
