The end of 2012 was marked by a clear superiority of competitions for ideas over competitions aimed at further implementation. Let's start with them.
Ideas Contests
The Urban Priority Projects Committee of the Detroit Branch of the American Institute of Architecture (AIA-UPC) has announced a concept competition for the Detroit River Embankment project. The former industrial and prosperous city has long been called dead. After the removal of the main city-forming industrial facilities from the city center, the population of Detroit began to decline sharply, residential and industrial areas gradually fell into complete desolation.
The organizers of the competition suggested that the coastal zone of the Detroit River - and in particular, a strategically important site in the very center of the city between the river and Jefferson Avenue - could become the beginning of its urban revival. It is in this area that architects and students from all over the world should focus their attention. Their main task is to create a vibrant public space that connects the city with the coast. The choice of means and methods for solving the problem is left to the participants - it can be either specific architectural and urban planning solutions, or pure art.
The jury includes Daniel Libeskind himself. The dead-line, unfortunately, is close: there are only two weeks left.

The aim of the next competition is to develop a concept of a space for study and creativity of young artists and designers based on a former factory building in Guangzhou (China).
Redtory is a former factory complex. In recent years, many factory buildings have been reconstructed and converted into design studios, art galleries and restaurants. In the process of forming a new cultural enclave, the next stage should be an old brick silo building.
Participants in this competition are invited to develop a project for a multipurpose facility that includes creative studios, workshops, galleries, schools, classrooms - in other words, a full-fledged workspace designed for at least one hundred people. Moreover, the project should affect not only the internal space of the building, it is necessary to use everything around - the courtyard, the garden and even the roof of the building.
The competition is held online. The panel of judges is predominantly American architects, designers, teachers and writers (David Zhai, John Simons, Simon McGown).

The idea competition "Latrobe City: Cities in Transition" examines the problems of industrial urban formations. How to turn a brown coal mining site near Melbourne into a developed urban center with social and cultural complexes and an environmentally friendly industry? The contestants will try to answer this question. The Melbourne Technological University, which initiated the competition, invites participants to look for alternative ways of developing the Latrobe City agglomeration - mines and industrial buildings can be re-profiled for new use, increase the percentage of housing stock, design roads, infrastructure and social facilities. Ideally, the organizers want to see a modern city of innovations instead of an industrial landscape, although so far only in a picture.

In addition to the residential buildings themselves, mainly mid-rise ones, it is necessary to fully think over the infrastructure, the layout of the courtyards, and landscaping.
