Väven, designed by the Norwegian bureau in cooperation with the Swedish workshop White, occupies a block in the city center, next to the town hall park. Its appearance is part of the program for the reconstruction of the coastal zone of the Ume River; it borders the new embankment and continues this public area with its varied public program.
Väven translated from Swedish means "weave" - this name reminds that the cultural center combines the city library, a hall for performances, concerts and conferences such as a black box, cinemas, spaces for various cultural and social events of a smaller scale, the Museum of the History of Women as well as a hotel, cafes and bars.
The "weaving" motif is also reflected in the facades: dark glazed areas seem to intertwine with light opaque panels, forming a bright graphic solution, which also refers to the pattern of birch bark, a tree typical of northern Sweden.
