Vsevolod Medvedev, Fourth Dimension

“This year we have graduated a group of bachelors from Moscow Architectural Institute. For the first time, a significant part of the design process and protection took place remotely. It was not easy for us and for the students. Unfortunately, the institute was unable to organize videoconferences for the defense of thesis projects, and all works were accepted practically without author's comments. I don’t understand what this is connected with, whether it’s an outdated material and technical base, or the conservative policy of the leadership. MARCHI, like many creative universities in the country, was not ready for such challenges as a pandemic. But, despite the absence of live meetings and discussions, the projects have a high level of elaboration and are in no way inferior to the works of their predecessors.

The choice of the project topic was not limited to a single concept. Students chose the direction independently, depending on their personal interests and urgent problems. The scope of work was very diverse: from small objects in dense urban development to large-scale urban planning solutions in the territories of Russia, Europe, the United States, and so on.

We tried not to impose our opinion, but to support and help develop individual innovative ideas. It was important to create a meaningful architectural design based on preliminary research and solving the identified problems. But most of the time, of course, was devoted to the elaboration of architectural, imaginative solutions. Interesting research became an excellent basis for further creativity, which ultimately led to non-standard approaches, and this is the most important thing.

Creative ambition, individuality and the ability to think outside the box - this is what we have been trying to foster in all of our students for twenty years. As always, we were pleased with the result. The whole group is distinguished by a unique vision of architecture, the ability to defend their point of view and a serious attitude to business."

Complex of the Research Institute of Archeology in Inkerman

In addition to the cultural and educational center of archaeological focus on the territory of the Crimean peninsula, the project of Evgenia Chumachenko offers an example of the development of urban public spaces.

“Archaeological research can be compared to the structures of the rings, which can be traced to the growth, history and development of a tree. With each new epoch, architecture and culture are "layered", something new appears, but old images and features are preserved. Growth rings have a lot of information, according to their thickness and size, you can trace all the serious changes in a tree throughout its life. It is this feature that forms the basis of the urban planning concept of the research institute.

The master plan of the site is based on a drawing of tree rings converging to the center - simple and complex architectural forms that reflect the process of evolution that has taken place over many centuries in this city and area. The rings are reflected in the structure of walking and cycling routes, along which you can bypass the entire territory of the complex. Due to the formation of rings on the master plan, it is possible to clearly distinguish the main square and divide the territory into zones: an institute, a museum, housing and pavilions for the reconstruction of models of archaeological monuments.

In addition to tree rings, temporal layers are superimposed on each other, forming a "gradient of time" - the older lies deeper, the later lies on the surface. The gradient manifests itself in the urban planning solution as the disclosure of space. From the side of the railway, the buildings are denser, towards the river it begins to dissolve, and extensive recreation areas appear.

The axial composition is aimed at human perception of the main cultural points of the city - the Kalamitu fortress, the cave city on the Zagaytinskaya rock and the Devil's Balka. On the main axis are the towers of the ethnocentre, each of which symbolizes the cultures of the peoples who lived on this land. On the second axis there is a complex of a museum and an institute.

The institute itself is an elongated complex of three buildings, which is grouped along the second urban planning axis, starting with the museum and ending with the second building of the institute. The museum building was conceived as a closed arched system that “collapses” and goes over to decorative columns in front of the museum building and onto the bridge, visually connecting the museum from one part of the river to the museum part at the institute. The facade of the main building of the institute also consists of arches that work not only on the facade, but also inside the space.

The project of the Research Institute of Archeology will become a major tourist and scientific center of the Crimean peninsula, attracting students and tourists. The complex is intended to revive the territory and raise the general scientific and cultural level of the area."

City cinema laboratory in Moscow

Anna Vorobyova

“The goal of the project is to support and stimulate the development of cinematography by creating an experimental cinema laboratory - a place where new formats are created for further promotion and high-quality screening of films.

zooming

The project is based on the existing film studio. Gorky, adjacent to an important center of urban activity - the VDNKh park. This arrangement makes it possible to reconsider the attitude of the film studio towards the city and create a center where the main thing is the openness of the whole process of creating a cinema for the viewer, conveying the essence of experimental cinema.

For the development of cinema, it is necessary to look for new facets of creativity, experiment, and the basis of the project is an environment that can adapt to any requirements in the creative process: format, attitude towards the viewer, various creative collaborations, etc. The creation of something new and unknown has no criteria for designing familiar spaces, so use cases are supported by different types of transformations for each stage of the life of a new cinema format in the laboratory. The stages correspond to the functions: educational, industrial and social, all complement each other and provide resources, an experiment is formed in the center of the intersection of functions.

1. Stage of creation. Educational Center "Tower".

The towers are composed of independent studios and are distributed according to the principle of filmmaking stages. Each studio is located on its own floor. The universal floor is a hall space with a transformation to expand and dim the light.

2. Stage of testing. Practice area - Curtain Labyrinth.

The core of the experiment, where spaces are formed by curtains or, if necessary, soundproofing, by partitions of cylindrical modules, which move along guides from the first level to the second.

3. Stage of application. Production complex - "Cinematic Promenade".

The pavilions move along guides, open natural sites, expand shooting spaces, open up access to the public and form the "Cinematic Promenade". This is a walking place, which consists of various fragments, people, like moviegoers, move along the path of a film of successive shots. It is a route with its own montage of the cultural space, which will always have different scenarios depending on the activity at the film studio.

The main public part of the complex is the auditorium adjacent to the existing building. The hall has the ability to adapt to any format. The floor space is occupied by lifting and lowering platforms, and the outer walls open onto the festival square with a pedestrian bridge connecting the public space with the core of the educational center."

Mental Health Center in Moscow

Yana Kurilova

“The modern world is progressing, replacing all the familiar concepts. We live in a stressful environment. The number of people with mental disorders is growing daily, including in Russia. The project offers a look at how new digital technologies, contextual design and architectural solutions can help a society in the field of mental health in this crisis.

zooming
zooming

The project is a mental health center based on a restorative approach. Much attention is paid to the employment of the rehabilitant and finding his strengths or talents, and not his illness and psychopathology. This approach builds self-confidence through self-help and self-reliance.

A special program will help eliminate the gap in the treatment of psychological illnesses between diagnosis and emergency care or medical treatment in a hospital. It will also make mental health diagnostics more accessible to everyone. Also, this project can be considered as the basis of a design guide, which considers a possible alternative to urban mental health care in Russia.

The building is an integral volume that connects and "envelops" all buildings on the site. The pitched roofs of all the houses that make up the complex are designed to remind of the traditional image of the House. The folded roof gives buildings a certain lightness and unites all the blocks into one whole. With its help, the issue of illumination and overheating of the building is solved, engineering communications are also protected in some areas."

Educational and research center for the integration of the latest technologies in the field of contemporary art and media entertainment "Mayakusha"

Denis Omelchenko

“The center is located in St. Petersburg at the mouth of the Smolenka River on the Morskaya Embankment of Vasilyevsky Island. The name of the center is due to the historical past of the river. In the 18th century, the river had a well-established name - Mayakusha. In the first half of the 19th century, others began to be used: Chernaya and Glukhaya rivers. In 1864, to eliminate the same name with another Chernaya Rechka, it was named the Smolensk River after the nearby Smolensk Cemetery. Later, the river acquired its current name.

zooming
zooming

Morskaya Embankment has a very difficult fate. For many years, it was planned to build the Alla Pugacheva Theater on this site, but even after three different proposed projects, construction did not start. Due to the difficulties in coordinating the construction of a theater in St. Petersburg, the idea of building a theater has now been abandoned. It is difficult to say with certainty what is currently planned for this section. The most realistic option is a recreation park. In this regard, in my project, I focus on preserving the natural landscape and species recreation areas on the Morskaya Embankment.

Center "Mayakusha" offers training programs developed in the framework of additional education and intended for retraining and continuous development of practicing artists, designers and specialists in related professions.

Main goals:

  • integration of the latest technologies in the field of contemporary art and media entertainment;
  • availability of information and technical resources for creative activities through specially equipped studios and workshops for practicing various types of art and design;
  • creation of a "point of attraction" through landscaping and interactive space at the mouth of the river and the creation of park recreation areas for walking;

On the territory of the center, there is a park project, the concept of which is that intangible digital technologies can turn nature into art without harming it.

Mayakusha Park is an interactive art space that changes with the presence of people. It consists of ground-based and resonant lamps floating independently on the surface of the water. When moving past the lamp or the wind blows, they begin to glow brightly and make a sound. Light from one lamp is transmitted to neighboring ones, and so on until all the light passes through the entire mouth of the river. This light from floating lamps transmits the same bright light to ground lamps near trees and stones. When illuminated, the lamps emit a sound tone corresponding to a specific color. When the wind is not blowing and there are no people around, the lamps begin to slowly go out.

The main pedestrian path to the center is the bridge, which starts next to the bus stop. It houses a small exhibition space for temporary exhibitions during warm seasons.

Also on the territory of "Mayakushi" there is an open exhibition hall. This space is intended for temporary exhibitions and all kinds of events in the summer season (performances, happyings, etc.).

Sculpture Hall is a space for strolling around permanently displayed sculptures. Due to this concept of the entrance group to the park in front of passing cars along Korablestroiteley Street, a beautiful and unusual visual series opens up. The second such space is located near the center and is sheltered from the wind."

Urban agricultural complex in West Covina, USA

Lydia Kharcheva

“The diploma project was preceded by a large study of suburbs in the United States, during which problems were identified that affect the quality of life of people. The focus was on the Los Angeles suburbs and this is where I was looking for a site to design.

zooming
zooming

West Covina is located 30 km from downtown Los Angeles and is connected to it by a highway. The river that runs through the city and the highway that crosses it are problem areas. The car-oriented nature of the suburbs makes the areas along the highways the busiest, while the residential areas are deserted and lifeless. The concrete river bed runs through the central part of the city, it is an exclusion zone and has an exclusively utilitarian function.

The site I have chosen is located at the intersection of these two "arteries", thereby allowing us to use both: to create a structure that interacts with the city and the road, to begin the improvement of the river bed.

The location of objects above and along the highway is dictated by the peculiarity of the planning structure of the suburbs, as well as by the need to create a landmark structure that is well readable by both motorists and pedestrians in different parts of the city.

Choosing the typology of the building, I set myself the task of solving such problems as: monotony of buildings, unrecognizable terrain and lack of landmarks, lack of public spaces, parks and pedestrian connections.

Vertical farming is becoming more and more relevant and in demand in modern megacities. Continuously growing cities absorb new territories, and people are actively leaving the countryside. Traditional agriculture is dying and now it must adapt to modern society. New ways of growing plants, such as aeroponics, hydroponics and aquaponics, allow you to get more crops in the shortest possible time, using several times less water, area and labor.

In the case of suburbia, an agricultural complex of this type will create activity in the city and an influx of tourists, ensure the autonomy of the area around it, give jobs to local residents, thereby reducing the number of cars.

The complex has several functions: a public one with restaurants and a market, an educational one with classes for schoolchildren and master-class zones, a research one with laboratories, and the main area is given over to cells for growing plants. The division of the complex into cells gives city residents the opportunity to rent separate blocks for various purposes, simplifies their operation and the construction of similar centers in other places with the ability to change the configuration of the structure."

Technopark of Arts on the territory of the former plant of artificial and synthetic fibers in Klin

Maria Cheltsova-Bebutova

“The existing buildings on the territory of Khimvolokno do not have any particular architectural value, but some of them are quite suitable for reconstruction and reconstruction for more demanded functions. In place of the rest of the unusable structures, a new art technopark is being designed with an adjacent residential campus.

zooming
zooming

On the territory of the technopark, I have identified six thematic zones corresponding to six types of arts, which I consider in the order of transition from visual and tactile perception to auditory:

  • The first zone - the zone of architecture and design (completely visual perception and even tactile), is located at the very beginning, if you move from the administration building, which is the compositional beginning of movement through the technopark.
  • The second zone is the zone of fine arts (visual perception, there is almost no tactile one).
  • The third zone is the zone of cinema, theater and photography (both visual and auditory perception).
  • The fourth zone is the zone of literature and drama (it can be expressed both in an image and in words, but words describe an image, therefore, it still rather refers to visual perception).
  • The fifth zone is the zone of choreography and acrobatics (both visual and auditory perception).
  • The sixth and last final zone, the most important and centrally located right at the intersection of the main planning axes, is the music zone.

Why main? Because only music belongs to the pure form of auditory perception. Only music can be perceived without the slightest image and picture in the head, which is symbolic of the superiority of the spiritual over the material (if we imagine that sound is something that does not exist physically, and a picture or image always has its physical embodiment). Highlighting the musical zone as a key one also correlates well with the branding of the city of Klin, which is based on sound and auditory perception (the motto of the city is “Klin sounds!”).

The open music arena designed in this area is designed for 3000 people. The arena itself is raised 45 meters above the ground, a park is organized under the arena, around which a swimming pool is laid out. You can also climb into the arena along a spiral pedestrian ramp organized around the arena. This object can replace the functionality of the classic city square.

Each of the six zones contains everything you need to study the corresponding art, to be able to create, create, invent and embody. I distinguish two types of spaces that are necessary to comprehend any of the talents.

  • The first type of spaces is for self-improvement / study / skills improvement. These spaces visually correspond to a square shape, since a well-equipped square room with orthogonal walls, floor and ceiling is enough for everyone to study or work.
  • The second type of space is for communication / master classes / exhibitions / concerts. These spaces visually correspond to a round shape, since it is convenient to hold mass screenings, lectures or exhibitions in more complex halls: a circular exhibition, a round square, hemispherical arenas.

A typical production workshop building consists of universal studios, to which water, sewerage and ventilation are connected, which significantly expands the range of activities in such a space. Also, due to movable partitions, studio data can be combined with each other. In such premises, you can arrange almost any workshop - model, painting workshop, mini-production. The workspaces are designed for 300 people. Visually, the building and all the spaces inside it have a square shape, which corresponds to the chosen concept of the relationship between form and function.
