The Peretzman-Scully Hall of Psychology Building and the Princeton Neuroscience Institute, connected by a common lobby, are the first buildings of a new science "district" on the university campus.
A researcher-driven architectural project designed to propel Princeton to the forefront of the human and animal nervous system and behavioral sciences. Thus, the needs of equipment sensitive to vibration and electromagnetic fields have been taken into account, in particular, a multifunctional magnetic resonance imaging scanner for brain research, which weighs 4 tons and costs 1.8 million dollars. It, like other similar devices, is located on underground and semi-underground levels.
In the building of psychology, the two lower floors on the north side are sunk into the ground, and on the south, due to the difference in relief, they are above ground level; in total, the building has five floors. The Institute of Neurobiology has two underground and two aboveground levels.
The complex area of 22,000 m2 is occupied by a variety of laboratories, scientists' offices, a large vivarium, conference rooms and classrooms.
The project complies with the LEED silver sustainability certification: the high-performance glass façade is equipped with external louvers, also made of glass; the ventilation system is also highly efficient; the building uses 15% less energy and 44% less water than the average.
