The Aviapark shopping and entertainment center is the largest facility in its class in Europe (total area - 390,000 sq. M). Its anchor tenants include Auchan, OBI, Hoff, Media Markt, Debenhams, M. Video, the 17-screen Karo SKY 17 cinema. There is also a year-round skating rink and a 24-meter aquarium with tropical fish. The total investment in the project reaches $ 1 billion (the main shareholders are Mikhail Zayts and Igor Rotenberg). Commissioned on November 28, 2014.
The development of a lighting system for such an object was a non-trivial and difficult task. On the other hand, work on the Aviapark project fits into the modern trend, when from design organizations and various contractors to the address of lighting companies orders are received not only for non-standard models or modifications of lamps, but for large-scale original lighting systems.
For example, when developing a lighting system for an airport or train station, a completely new solution must be created. And quite often it is subsequently launched into a series. So it happened in this case - for the lighting system of the Aviapark shopping and entertainment center "from scratch" two models of original lamps were created at once, one of which was adopted as the basis for a separate lighting project and, as a result, entered the main range of company lamps MDM-LITE.
The specifics of the work of modern lighting technicians is such that often only a sketch or a concept, a basic idea comes from an architect or designer working on a project. In this case, architects from the Callison Architects bureau, in order to clearly explain their idea, sent a photo of a car with the headlights on at night and on during the day as a technical task. The light from its headlights is dazzling at night, and practically invisible in daylight. The meaning of this message is as follows: you need to create a system of powerful lighting, which at the same time would be comfortable for visual perception. That is, it was necessary to minimize light resonance - a phenomenon that occurs under contrasting lighting.
Indeed, in order to provide the required level of illumination in a large space of a huge shopping center, it was necessary to use a considerable number of lamps with an intense flow of light. However, they were not supposed to create a blinding effect. How to do it?
It was decided to develop a completely new model for this project with two light sources at once. The new luminaire was supposed to be a combination of a Downlight LED downlight with an overall luminous panel around it. Thus, an intense stream of light emanating from the center would not cause visual discomfort.
The initial sketch of the new model was significantly redesigned in the process of interaction between architects and lighting technicians. As a result of this work, a functional and decorative pendant lamp ARIZ (ARIZ) of simultaneously directed and diffused light was created. Its main feature is to provide a bright 65-degree light beam in a halo of soft, diffused light. The wide light distribution made it possible to use these luminaires in rooms with almost any ceiling height while maintaining visual comfort, while at the same time creating their own visible ceiling level.
The technological design of the model organically blended with the style of high ceilings with open engineering communications. In addition, this luminaire was also designed in an emergency version, which made it possible not to use additional luminaires to perform the emergency lighting function.
But this is only part of the project. For the same shopping center, the original PAPER PLANE LED luminaire was developed and subsequently launched into a series. The fact is that Aviapark is located on Khodynskoye Pole, where the first airport in Moscow was located earlier. Therefore, it was logical that the idea arose to create a lighting solution that imitates children's paper airplanes.
In just a couple of months, the project went through all stages from sketches to detailed study and full-scale samples. The solution provided for the creation of compositions from groups of such lamps in the form of tracks and "stacks" - groups of functional models and decorative lamps with RGB backlighting.
For objective reasons, this model was not used in the Aviapark shopping and entertainment center. However, she took on a life of her own. For the first time, the PAPER PLANE luminaire was presented at the Moscow Design Week exhibition at the Artplau Design Center in October 2014. Anna Masello, a representative of the Italian holding Margraf, did not hide her emotions: “The first thing that came to my mind when looking at these airplanes was Wow!”.
Today this designer lamp can be seen in a number of private interiors, in the Kids-friendly supermarket of the Azbuka Vkusa retail chain in the Moscow Central Children's Store on Lubyanka, in the new Smart Park business center in Yekaterinburg, etc. This elegant model gives airiness to any interior and brings a playful element to it.

The next project can be considered not as an isolated case, but as a manifestation of a whole trend towards the creation of non-standard lighting systems for large spaces. The classic solution for the illumination of large rooms is the "bell" lamps (they have a characteristic shape). This is the simplest, most budgetary, but at the same time not very interesting solution in terms of design: such lamps can be seen in almost every shopping center.
In addition, large objects almost always include areas that receive increased attention, for example, atriums of shopping centers, hotel lobbies and halls of business centers. These zones have an important image aspect, and architects and designers try to apply original lighting solutions in them. In addition, when working with large spaces, it is important both horizontal and vertical lighting so that the textures of the finishing materials used in the interior are clearly visible. And "bells" do not provide such an opportunity.
Nowadays, many architects use the so-called skylight with a large glazing to create natural light in a large space during the day. At the same time, it is necessary to minimize the effect of insolation, when direct sunlight heats the room and creates glare. One of the possible solutions to this problem was implemented in the Krasny Kit shopping and entertainment center (Mytishchi). Here, a functional and decorative installation was created from round screens with a diameter of 3 and 5 m, as well as disc-shaped lamps with a diameter of 1.5 m with a wide luminous intensity curve. During the day, this solution protects the inner space of the atrium from excessive direct sunlight, without interfering with the penetration of scattered daylight into the room, and at night, thanks to the effect of reflected surfaces, it contributes to better and more uniform illumination with artificial light.
Original lighting systems
Another interesting example - when working on a lighting system for one new airport, the authors of the project proposed to use large-sized lamps in the form of airships. The task was also to create a comfortable sound environment. The selection of sound-absorbing materials with the required qualities made it possible to create lighting solutions with low weight loads on the supporting structures. In addition, a methodology and sequence for the high-rise installation of large luminaires at the facility was developed specifically for this project.
In another case, the authors of the hotel project wanted to fill the large space of the foyer with lamps in the form of balls. In itself, such an idea is not unusual. Therefore, a combined architectural solution of luminous balls of different sizes with chrome-plated spheres of different diameters was implemented - which led to the appearance of a non-trivial effect of numerous re-reflections of lamps in mirror spheres. Thus, an increase in the efficiency of the luminaires was achieved, and most importantly, the solution acquired unique individual features.
In the large lobby area of another hotel, general lighting was implemented with narrow-beam spotlights on the busbar and recessed luminaires. They provide luminous flux with narrow angles to walls and floors, as well as create a contrasting difference between light and shadow. A similar solution is implemented in one cultural center using pendant lights with narrow optics to create a dramatic atmosphere.
Also recently, shadowless lighting systems have become increasingly popular among architects and designers, when the entire level of the ceiling is used as a lamp. This visually enlarges the space, and it is quite comfortable to be in it: a uniform level of illumination is created without shadows and glare.
