Block "Gorny" for 280 athletes on Nikolaevskaya Sopka - the site of the World Winter Universiade-2019; the "Academy of Winter Sports" will host the Universiade freestyle and snowboard competitions.
Description of architects:
“The building is a linear composition consisting of three rectangular volumes of variable number of storeys, subordinate to the natural relief. The first three-storey volume includes an administrative part with a staircase and elevator unit and a medical block. The second one is two-storeyed and contains coaching cells and showers. The building ends with a compact one-storey volume containing rooms for preparing ski equipment, a staircase and an entrance hall to the ski slope.
The building is located perpendicular to the slope and strung on the main pedestrian axis along the foot of the Nikolaevskaya volcano. The second pedestrian path runs through the building.
The flying shape of the object is emphasized by contrasting trim, a pedestrian walkway and a console above the main entrance. These compositional elements create associations with sports and movement. The object demonstrates the dynamics and speed of alpine skiing, and the zigzag that the building forms in the plan is a nod to the athlete's trajectory in the slalom discipline."
