Course projects on the theme "House of Middle Rise" were carried out at the Department of Architecture of Residential Buildings in a group led by Professor A. V. Shutikova, V. A. Kolgashkina, E. S. Vasilyeva, A. D. Kopeina. The students were faced with the task of designing a house, relying on the work of a certain architect (Jean Nouvel, Aldo Rossi, Stephen Hall, etc.) or a bureau (Dogma, Caruso st John, MVRDV). Students studied the creative method of the selected architects, their urban planning positions and, relatively speaking, worked “under their leadership”. According to the teachers, the experiment was a success, and the result was curious, dissimilar projects. And an in-depth acquaintance with the work of recognized masters of architecture is very important for the professional development of future architects.
We publish projects selected by teachers.
Natalia Loginova
Project for Novosuschevskaya street. It is based on an analysis of the creative principles of the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. It is supposed to form a composition of laconic volumes, the connecting element for which will be a pedestrian zone passing at different levels. The main idea is to change the visual experience as you move through the residential complex. The open amphitheater is the center of public life of the residential complex, where you can hold meetings, celebrations or socialize. The amphitheater is surrounded by playgrounds.
The complex consists of six buildings with different planning solutions. There are both sectional buildings and two gallery-type buildings, in which open public areas are organized at the level of the second floor. Due to the peculiarities of the relief, the three houses are united by a stylobate, which also houses public spaces and service functions.
Kirill Volkov
The author, following the principles of Dogma bureau, develops the idea of "absolute architecture". In the center of Moscow on Sretenka, it is proposed to build a residential complex of four buildings, pierced by an axial passage through the arches. The axial movement passes along the bridge, raised to the level of the second floor. The culmination of the movement through the courtyards is the facade decoration of the last building. For all the imagery and theatricality of the solution, thoughtful and varied planning solutions (from small studios to 4-room apartments) are presented here, insolation issues are competently resolved, and even the scenery carries a functional load. The first floor is dedicated to public functions, there are two cafes and a kids club.
Veronica Babenko
Jean Nouvel became the "leading architect" of this project: the author was carried away by his idea of "the right building in the right place", as well as the abundance of greenery in Nouvel's projects and their imagery. The residential complex is intended for Novosuschevskaya street. The proximity to small-scale historical buildings has formed the concept of "beads": the buildings of the complex are strung on the axis of small volumes with pitched roofs and thus react to the scale of the environment. The houses have a wide variety of apartments, each of which has a balcony. All residents have access to common green roofs.

The house on Trubnaya Street was designed under the influence of Aldo Rossi. The project involves the creation of a solid structure, whose layering is emphasized by various materials. In the figurative solution of the house, spatial and decorative techniques are intertwined, typical for the creativity of the chosen architect. The teachers noted the detailed study of the first public floor, where the store, the children's center and the cafe are located.
Anastasia Sharapova
The project is inspired by the work of Alexander Brodsky. The author decided to preserve the greenery on the selected site, which is why the internal structure of the complex, which combines private and public spaces, has become more complicated. Everything is enclosed in a glass shell. Insulation of individual parts, despite the permeability, can be achieved by using glass of different transparency. In addition, glazing is not only a decorative technique, but also a means to achieve the desired level of insolation.

"Under the leadership" of the Caruso St John bureau, a strategy of delicate intervention in the prevailing urban environment was chosen. The house on Trubnaya Street is designed as a simple one-piece volume, the expressiveness of which is achieved by the play of light and shadow due to the double facade and loggias of different depths. Pastel shades of the facade, decorative elements and a permeable enclosure of the used roof add lightness to the volume - so the building more closely matches the scale of the environment.
A group of students - Aslakhanova Yasmina, Tsukerman Victoria, Marchuk Ivan - as part of the course project took part in the ISOVER competition for the design of residential areas for the city of Brest. The general concept is to form a residential area of three types of houses, different in architectural and planning solutions. The courtyard is raised by 4.5 meters and is freed from the movement of personal vehicles. This creates a quiet and safe environment for the occupants. The entrance to the residential building is possible both from the ground level and from the courtyard level.
Yasmina Aslakhanova
The residential building was designed with an eye to Steven Holl Architects and is distinguished by an original composition of volume and attention to the organization of the courtyard space. There are 5 types of apartments in the house, the space in them can be changed due to the use of transformable partitions. Most of the apartments have their own small garden, and on some floors there are common terraces. The street facades are austere and flat, while the courtyard facade is organized by a dynamic composition of protruding green terraces.
Ivan Marchuk
The MVRDV principles underlying the project urged the author to be functional. The choice of the shape of the house is due to the need to ventilate the yard and create visual connections with neighboring quarters. The house has five types of apartments. The roof of the building, landscaped and maintained, can be used for small private gardens.
Victoria Zuckerman
The building has a modular structure. This is a kind of constructor assembled from apartments of various sizes and configurations. Here is a wide selection of planning solutions for people with different social and economic status. Some apartments have access to their own green roofs, where you can set up flower beds and small gardens.
