A shopping center and nightclub will appear at the tourist complex, a 10-minute monorail ride from Incheon International Airport, which also serves Seoul. In addition to the MVRDV buildings on the "Entertainment Square", the complex with a total area of 33 hectares will include a hotel with a casino and a conference center, a Plaza with a boutique hotel, food court, shops, and a spa center. All venues are due to open in 2018 for the Winter Olympics.
The buildings surrounding Paradise City (designed by Korean bureau Gansam Architects & Partners) are designed in a “traditional” way, and MVRDV architects reflected their complex facades on the monolithic walls and roofs of their buildings, as well as on the pavement between them. In addition, their structures respond to neighboring buildings with their shape.
The brightest part of the project is the "sunbeam", a huge golden spot that marks the entrance to the nightclub. It covers part of the facade and the "amphitheater" in front of the doors of the club, through which guests will solemnly rise to the threshold. This spot will be visible from both landing and taking off planes.
The Sandbox, a 3,600 m2 shopping center, curves in an arc to “reflect” the adjacent casino building. The nightclub (6200 m2) also includes an aqua club and a winter garden on the top floor. At ground level, the monolithic facades of the buildings are slightly raised, like a drapery, revealing glazing through which you can look inside. In addition, both buildings are placed on a service plinth, and through the glass floors it will be possible to observe the movement of vehicles entering and leaving the underground garage, etc.
