SYNTHESIS [synthesis] is an educational program. By itself, the definition of synthesis sounds like this: "synthesis is the process of combining or combining previously disparate things or concepts into a whole or set."

What's the idea? Everything is very simple - architecture, art and modern technologies merge, turning into something single and inseparable whole. It became interesting for us to figure it out! The first SYNTHESIS was research - the exploration of the links between architecture, art and technology. Then the events were attended by architects, sound designers, video artists, robotics, photographers, filmmakers, graphic designers, computer game developers, choreographers and many others. Representatives of the best schools and organizations gathered at one site to share their knowledge. The program was attended by over two thousand listeners. The events took place in parallel in four halls of the CDA. In total, we managed to organize more than 30 lectures, discussions and master classes. As I said before, the first SYNTHESIS covered a huge number of areas, which revealed a number of topics for educational activities.

How will SYNTHESIS be presented at Zodchestvo?

At the Zodchestvo festival, SYNTHESIS will reveal the issues of architectural presentation. We will talk about architectural graphics, public speaking, web design, layout, working with fonts and modern tools - everything that almost every architect encounters every day. From 17 to 20 October, from 5 pm to 8 pm, four thematic educational modules will be held, for which we have invited the best specialists from the areas related to the presentation.

To understand why we do this, let's look at a few points of architectural education:

The format and its implications:

Perhaps, once the “square meters” format was relevant. I think it was convenient when working on a drawing board, it was possible to attach a flight tire to it. But the trees were taller, and it was possible to enter the metro with a stretcher during rush hour …

Now we live in a world of a completely different scale - both in presentation and perception. Slide-to-slide presentation is much more convenient, and small formats are perceived more naturally. Judge for yourself, which of you rented a private house to a customer, or any other project on a tablet? It even sounds strange …

Understanding this prompts architects to work with small formats, web presentations, pay more attention to fonts and master layout tools.

It is not easy to change a large sheet to a small one - it is a special way of thinking, a different sequence of presentation of the material, its own compositional rules, a different principle of perception of information by the viewer.

Communication and argumentation:

The ability to argue a position and clearly build your own line is a priority skill of many successful people. But how can one learn to conduct a professional dialogue and reasoning when the defense of projects in most universities is as follows: there is a commission, and everyone leaves the audience?

As a result, no one teaches architects to speak. This is a very important skill, especially in architectural practice.

Tools:

Inseparability of technology and aesthetics. Several years of academic drawing, drafting, composition, building rules - but in isolation from modern tools.

In the past, we gained a comprehensive knowledge of design and drawing - the culture of production. All this took place inside the project auditoriums. Over time, the process of teaching the instrument became a separate discipline. In this process, a gap arises between technology and aesthetics.
