In February, the annual congress of the National Roofing Union was held in Moscow with the participation of representatives of the Ministry of Construction and leading industry associations. More than 150 specialists - managers and technical specialists of roofing companies, manufacturers of building materials, employees of leading research organizations and foreign guests - took part in the congress. Rockwool experts presented new research findings.

ROCKWOOL is one of the main partners of the Congress. Two experts from the company made presentations that sparked a lively discussion.

On the first day, within the framework of the section "Fire safety of roofs: design, construction, interaction with regulatory authorities" ROCKWOOL expert Alexander Fomichev made a presentation on the topic of fire hazard of structures using polymer insulation. The speaker for the first time presented to the professional public the results of a large-scale series of tests of combined roofs for compliance with the fire hazard class of a building structure K0) - the results of more than 40 tests in three large accredited laboratories of the Ministry of Defense, including public tests with the involvement of the media and representatives of other organizations producing thermal insulation. The tests were carried out in strict accordance with GOST 30403-2012 Building structures. Method for determining fire hazard”.

The objects of testing were mineral wool products of such brands as ROCKWOOL, Technonikol, Ecover, Isoroc, Paroc, as well as foam insulation materials - XPS Penoplex, PSB-S P35, PIR - Profholod, PirroGroup, Lissant. In addition, ROCKmembrane and Plastfoil PVC membranes were tested. The results turned out to be depressing: out of 40 tests on 24 materials, ignition occurred, on 4 tests - uncontrolled combustion (all - PIR, laid in 1 layer, having valid certificates for the K0 design). As a result of the study, it was recognized that the safest solutions for combined roofs are structures with XPS (50 mm) in combination with mineral wool (in two layers with a joint gap of 40 + 40 mm and 50 + 50 mm). Mineral wool belonging to the flammability group G1, tested in the structure together with bitumen waterproofing, showed the expected high fire safety and compliance with the fire hazard class of the structure K0.

According to Alexander Fomichev, ROCKWOOL expert, testing structures for fire safety is a necessity, since, unfortunately, often harmless at first glance materials under the influence of fire ignite like candles, releasing poisonous combustion products into the environment. Moreover, even the presence of fire safety certificates, testifying to the resistance of structures to fires and the spread of fire, does not guarantee 100% protection. There are often situations when one material is provided for certification, and the supplier of ready-made solutions is provided with another, with changed characteristics. In addition, there is always the possibility of encountering counterfeiting or counterfeiting. This is why ROCKWOOL decided to clarify and test the most popular combination roofing solutions on the market.

Some materials were tested as part of the action

"Test the insulation for flammability." The promotion is still valid - if you have doubts about the fire safety of a material, and of any brand, you can contact the ROCKWOOL company, which finances the check in an accredited laboratory.

Rockwool experts will continue testing this year. It is planned to carry out a number of tests on the basis of the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Fire Protection (FGBU VNIIPO), which belongs to the structure of the Ministry of Emergency Situations. It is assumed that, based on the test results, changes will be made to the existing regulatory and technical documents. Company representatives will participate in professional industry conferences to educate industry professionals and increase manufacturers' responsibility for their solutions.

On February 17, at the section “Benefits of using energy-efficient solutions in roof construction,” Grigory Gromakov from ROCKWOOL analyzed various ways to assess the operational reliability of thermal insulation products on a flat roof. The specialist presented a video of the results of new field tests to change the properties of thermal insulation products made of stone wool, confirming their high strength characteristics. The expert also proposed a new, improved methodology for determining the performance characteristics of stone wool insulation boards, which takes into account more realistic factors than the walkability test. Such, for example, as removing snow from the roof, during which the material can also wear out, which affects the durability of the products.
