Boston studio Höweler + Yoon and Slovenes Ofis presented a building design for a circus school in Portland. It will become the first US accredited circus institution. In addition to an academic institution, an arena for 500 spectators will be located within its walls.
The architects "borrowed" the shape of the building from traditional circus tents, but modernized them in their own way: part of the structure rises above the ground on tall slender columns. This solution created a patio filled with natural light; its authors propose to use it as an additional platform for performances.
On the ground floor there is a lobby that leads to the main hall, in the upper part of the building there is a complex system of premises, where there are classrooms and classrooms for practical exercises, as well as a library, media center and administrative offices. In addition, large rooms for acrobatics are equipped on the upper floors. The external and internal facades of the halls are made entirely of glass, so that spectators can watch the trainings and performances of the artists.
